KAHM FM 102.1 Prescott, AZ KAHM.INFO KYBC 96.3

It's really rather interesting to read sooo many posts on "how to make standards
a success" and what makes a successful standards radio station. KAHM FM 102.1
has been playing the "beautiful music" format successfully since it first went on
the air in 1981. Rather than seeking the instant gratification and wealth so many
desire, the owners, Lew and Nancy Silverstein, have taken little steps forward,
making KAHM, dire I say, one of the most enduring and successful radio stations
of any genre on the air. They are in the process of moving their main transmitter,
atop Mingus Mtn to a higher peak located some 20 miles closer to Phoenix. They
have another transmitter here in Prescott on Badger Mtn and a translator at the
same location to continue serving Prescott, with the best easy listening and beautiful
music this side of heaven! KAHM.INFO is in the process of upgrading their online
site to provide a better listening experience.
Another radio station, KYBC at 96.3 FM (K242BZ) plays
"America's Best Music" and can be heard here in Prescott and throughout Yavapai
County. They too are successful, bringing the standards format to Central Arizona.
Together, they complement the radio listening experience here in Central and Northern
Arizona.

Any idea if there are any plans on increasing the bitrate of their online stream?
 
It is my understanding that KAHM.INFO has been much more
popular than anyone expected and not only is the website being
upgraded but the audio and bitrate as well.

I'm driving cross-country to San Diego again in a couple of weeks, and on way back east, plan to take I-17 north from Phoenix to Flagstaff, and will definitely be listening. I posted on here a couple years back about how great their signal is along I-17..Will be curious to see if I can get them east of Flagstaff.

I just might stop by Prescott and check out their studios and Public File, and ask about their future plans!!! Sounds like they would be a fun place to visit.
 
In the past, you could pick up the very weak signal just east of Yuma and listen
all the way to Joseph City/Holbrook. Along I-10, I could receive the signal just
a few miles east of Palm Springs. However, since KCMT, also at 102.1, in
Tucson came on the air, the KAHM coverage to the south and west has been
reduced. Their studios, actually on "Henry St" aka "6th St" are surprisingly small
and non pretentious. As Nancy Bennett-Silverstein once told me, "We're a very
small station with a big signal." I do hope you visit us here in Prescott. The
Courthouse Square and Whiskey Row, downtown, draw lots of visitors. We're the
home to world's oldest continuous rodeo and Arizona's Christmas City.

KAHM, FM 102.1, Prescott, Arizona USA!"
 
Last summer I was able to get a weak signal around Jacob Lake to the north, probably close to the same distance away as Yuma is to the south. I wonder if the Grand Canyon has any effect on broadcast signals.
 
The late KAHM engineer, Al Hartzel, once told me that the Badger Mtn transmitter actually
got out a better signal to the Grand Canyon and places to the north than does the Mingus
Mtn transmitter. Apparently, Bill Williams Mtn and other geography prevent much of the
Mingus Mtn sites transmitter from making it northward.

The folks at KAHM have completed their upgrades to their website, KAHM.INFO
The streaming capacity and bit rate have improved leading to a more rewarding
listening experience. Overall, the website is more user friendly and interactive.
Currently, there appears to be a minor problem with the playlist, which I'm confident
will be addressed quickly.

A problem I have with the playlist is the update feature. I don't know if it's my browser, but I have the same issue on two different computers. The current song does not display automatically unless you click the 'Refresh' button—and that causes the entire webpage to update which shuts down the stream for a few seconds. It's kind of annoying, but if I recall, it's an improvement over how it used to be. To find out the song currently playing, I used to have to exit the site completely and open it up again.

On the plus side, KAHM has the only website I know of with changing pictures you can use as a screen saver. A nice touch which makes the listening experience even more relaxing.
 
I actually picked up KAHM in Lynnwood, WA (15 miles north of Seattle) in 1995 during a nice, hour long afternoon e-skip.....
