Kansas City v St. Louis FM Country Radio

Kansas City supports 3 full signal FM country stations. 2 of them consist of tight playlists of mainly current songs. KFKF, however, is the market leader and plays a significant amount of gold from the 80's and even the 70's.

St. Louis, on the other hand, has 2 full signal FM country stations. 93.7 The Bull has a very narrow playlist and WIL doesn't go that deep into the 90's anymore.

Are the demographics in these two markets such that country music, particularly older country music, is more popular in KC? Or is corporate ownership in St. Louis just reluctant to expand the playlists?

Honestly, there are some signals that reach St. Louis that a lot of people listen too that cover that demographic. 99.9 KFAV and J-98.5.

This seems to be an odd subject in the ST. LOUIS forum.

My 2 cents anyway...
KC's demographics are much more different that STL's.
STL is much more of a dense urban/metropolitan area with around 1 million more in the population.
KC is much more rural and less urban/metropolitan - it also has a more western culture and demo.

WIL and KSD seem to do fine in the STL market as the two powerhouse country formats. There are several suburban rimshots that bleed through - like KFAV 99 in the Westplex and J98 in the south metro area. Also there is country legents AM 1190 KQQZ which fills a nice AM niche too.

You can add KWRE 730 am to that list as well

And also WSMI AM 1540/FM 106.1 Litchfield/Hillsboro/Carlinville; both signals make it down to the Metro East.
