Kari Lake previews her plans for Voice of America in the next Administration.

Serious question. How many folks in the US even know, or care that VOA is a thing anymore? Or will listen to that programming? Seems like this is a huge non issue.
I doubt there was a time since the early days of the Cold War that most Americans knew about VOA. There never have been massive numbers of SW listeners in the US, when compared to the greater population. With the BBC it's probably a bit different, being that it's a national network, with the World Service being a part of that, technically. And the BBC has so many FM's at night carrying their programming that people in the US and Canada are aware of its existence, but with VOA it's different.

VOA is still important, but the average American probably doesn't know it exists, much less has concerns as to how it is used, or could be used, to promote the US, or any pro-US information / propaganda to the rest of the world.

Once Kari Lake is running it, they will know about it. Because she's not the type who labors in obscurity, if you know what I mean.

She is being put there to attract attention. That's what she does. She's been doing it for four years.

FWIW, I listened for maybe half an hour or more of VOA to Africa, in English, transmitted from Botswana (9775 kHz, on Shortwave). It was a lot of negative news concerning Trump -- not just the Gaza thing, but his cutting off of USAID and other matters, with soundbites of Democrats in DC stating their positions on those issues. The coverage was fair, but it definitely was not MAGA by any stretch.

If the past week hasn’t clearly demonstrated where things are heading, I’m not sure what will.

There is no entity that can disseminate propaganda that is too small for them to leverage, and no rule or regulation that can’t be circumvented or ignored. It’s a show of authoritarian force. Anything under their control is used accordingly, and what may not technically be under their control in a literal sense is beaten into submission through investigation and litigation until they simply give up or go broke. Either is an acceptable outcome.

What you are forgetting is that next to Nobody listens to the Voice of America anymore. So it just doesn’t matter and is a waste of time for everyone.

It wouldn’t surprise me to see most of the remaining USAGM shortwave output eliminated in the next two years. Major cuts were already made this past July.

There have been some news stories recently about the BBC World Service carrying out further budgetary belt-tightening, so VOA wouldn’t be alone in making more cutbacks.

Just shut it off and save the money. VOA is irrelevant in the Internet age. Then the folks on this board (who probably never listen to it anyway), and who's heads are exploding over the politics of this can find something else to be aghast about.

While we are discussing the activities and effectiveness of the various USAGM services, it might be worth taking a look at how Russia is influencing international audiences: Russian propaganda: How Moscow uses disinformation in Africa – DW – 02/03/2025

Russia is doing all this without the use of shortwave radio. The last remnants of Russia’s international shortwave service were shut down in 2014.

Russia was on SW for.. a few weeks in 2016 in the Sahka region? i think it was.. but i cant remember why

Possibly an earthquake? Or other natural disaster?
I wish i remember, and it seems few others even remember it was on.. I contacted thomas witherspoon at swling.com and he vaugely rememebered but not enough to be of any use. i heard all 3 frequencies out here

interestingly, Radio Russia has wooden registrations that show up in HFCC every year with coordinates to this site:

55N45
037E18

There have been a couple of SW outlets in the Russian Far East the past decade that targeted local indigenous communities. They didn’t seem to last long.

I’m out and about, but will have to recheck the 2025 WRTH. I don’t recall seeing any Russian domestic SW listed in the latest edition, other than the time signals in the vicinity of 5, 10 and 15 MHz.

i dont recall hearing russia on SW at all in the 10-12 years ive been doing SW on the west coast between Ca and AK... except for that few weeks reactivation around 2016

Wooden? Autocorrect glitch or some term I'm unfamiliar with in any radio context?

Thats the term used for registrations that are fake... multiple organizations have still registered SW BC frequencies despite not using SW in years.. jordan was one, theyd been registered up until very recently despite not being on SW in years. Kuwait isnt on, but they still register. same with Oman
