RIP to the former WJW staff member. Here is Tribune's statement on her death.

We are heartbroken to share with you the news that our beloved, former colleague and friend, Kathleen Cochrane DePiero, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday after a brief illness.

Our FOX 8 family learned of her passing Sunday morning.

Kathleen, 38, was a valued, outstanding reporter for our station starting in 2005, until she decided to step away to be a full-time mom to her children several years later.

She rejoined FOX 8 last summer as a reporter during the Republican National Convention, where she provided detailed reports to Tribune stations across the country. We were thrilled to welcome her back.

Working with Kathleen was joyous, always, as her smile lit up the newsroom. She was a hard-working, determined and thorough employee.

Update the autopsy shows that DePiro died from complications from the flu.

An autopsy report shows DiPiero died from the complications of the flu.

According to a story on Spectrum News’ website, 36 hours after showing signs of the illness the mom of two passed away.

The most likely cause of death was pneumonia and sepsis.

DiPiero helped launch the 24 hour network in North Carolina 16 years ago.

Is this year's flu strain particularly dangerous or is there just some sort of media feeding frenzy going on with flu-death stories? I can't remember a winter with so many.

yeah, it's a bad flu year, but at the same time, the media is making the matters worse by talking about it alot to spread more fear to us all, since the US news has a "it's it bleeds it leads" mentality when it comes to diseases and disasters.

When the predictions are for as many as 50,000 deaths from this year's strains, and hospitals are setting up pre-admission tents in their parking lots, we can say that this is a very, very bad flu year.

I saw my doctor yesterday, as I have had both of the major flu strains despite the flu shot, and he told me I was doing fine; he had three patients in the ICU and he said it is the worst season he's seen in his 30 years of practice.

If anything, the media is not doing enough in the area of covering precautions, guidance on when to safely return to work, use of masks and other information.

Hawaii so far has no reported flu cases while California has the most flu reports. But then again its unfortunate that a former WJW talent died by the complications of this specific flu strain.
