KC 101 Radio Reunion Weekend in July 2009 for 30th anniversary?

I absolutely understand the signals into the market. I used to get calls from Long Island, Rhode Island and Massachusetts while I was on the air there. But the falling of KC101 in the market goes back to when Glen Beck was in mornings there, but it was only while he was the PD there. They started playing all these alternative records that had no crossover appeal while playing everything else in the Top 40, but there was a TON of alternative. It was completely unlistenable. It sounded like no one was editing the log...just hit F10 and print. This was before Star 104 changed to alternative. That started a ratings slide. They then brought in Kidd Kelly, who managed to control it a bit more, but Glen Beck still had too much control. Then he left and Tony Bristol came in and had more control over the station. He actually made the station more listenable. I don't have the numbers in front of me, but if my memory serves me correctly, the station went up. The reason I could tell that Tony had more control is that I was at the station one day, sitting in Tony's office when Glen came in and was asking Tony's permission for something he was showing him. Tony made adjustments to whatever was on the paper and Glen left. It was weird because Glen knows who I am and didn't acknowledge me sitting right there. (He and I had worked together in the past and he later interviewed me when he was PD at KC101...I turned it down.) Then Tony left and I can't remember who was PD there then...was it Kelly Nash? Kelly has a great personality and way with people. He did what he could to balance the programming and sales sides, but the sales side started winning. More and more of the sales promotions started getting on the air, as has happened at most stations in the country. Once Kelly left, it's changed. I don't think it's ever recovered from the alternative thing. That's really when KISS got a stronghold on the market. I will say that it's tough to ever win back ratings as huge as what KC101 had in a market that has so many crossover signals. It's hard to get back ratings of any kind if they have ever been allowed to slip such as that. I guess we all expect so much of KC101 and maybe we have too high of an expectation.
Expecting a the only CHR in New Haven to achieve decent numbers is not too high of an expectation.
I realize all these other stations come into New Haven county. They came into the market back in the 80's and 90's.
Competition was as tough back then as it is today. You have to give the listener a reason to stick around. Everything has to fall into place. Great relateable personalities! (not liner card readers) local PD's don't give jocks freedom of expression after morning drive . Have a good sounding station voice for the breakers and sweepers. The music mix is crucial. Have to be focused. Promo everything.Sound like your totally into the community.
SR said all depts are a piece of the puzzle. When they fit together you have success.

you know what caliv? thank you thank you thank you. i have heard the exact same stuff. the station wasn't a joke - it was worse. so many advertisers pledged they would NEVER EVER give their money to kc101 ever again because of thier business practices. have any of you that use #'s to prove your "point" even seen anything other than the 12+ numbers? you reveal your ignorance by judging 12+. have you ever considered that wkss kills 12-17 year olds and that inflates their 12+ numbers? do you even have any idea how screwed up numbers are in small markets because arb pulls data from larger market dmas and totally under samples the metro in those small markets?
caliv, i worked there 1983-1993. commercial and promo voice announcer for KC/AVZ. i have copies of the Arb and Birch numbers. All the important demo break down numbers for a CHR. ;D

let it go, brother. let it go.

He makes fun of the business, then admits he's holding onto 10 to 25 year old Arbitron records? Obviously, his glory days are behind him and he's trying to remember them.

The best days that station will EVER see again! And that's a fact! The elevator cable was cut back many years ago and it's been heading south at warp speed....captain. "Houston....I mean San Antonio we have a problem" ::) ::) ::)

If you dump on others on this board for talking about the way radio used to be and make fun of them for reminiscing, then what do you call it when you hold onto 25 year old Arbitron ratings?

Holding onto ratings you are proud of is no different than showing someone an award you won years ago. I am proud of my time there too. I have used KC101 as a standard when working at other stations, just as I use some of the lesser run stations as examples of what not to do. We got into this business because it inspired us for some reason and if that's the case, why not hold onto mementos? If you're proud of the college you went to, you might hold onto mementos of that time also.

I was proud of the 1980 World Series Championship until Wednesday night!! ;D

Actually, it's more like holding on to your report cards from when you were a kid. Now a Marconi, a Billboard Award, etc, those are awards you hold on to. Being proud is one thing. Holding on to the past is another.

Not if you were part of a team that was so electric that it actually worked! If you've never been part of something like that it can be hard to understand. By the way, I still have most of my report cards from middle school and high school. I have a lot of pride in my grades and what has made me the person that I am today. I guess I just don't see anything wrong with that. I also have copies of my ratings from several of the stations I was at along with my two Billboard awards, three Gavin awards, my two Bobby Poes, the two covers of Hitmakers I was on and the few articles I wrote. It's all a part of my history and I will pass these down to my son so he can share them with his family when I am old and decrepit. (sp?)

Ditto with props to SallysPizza and Video. To this day, I still have the Arb books from the very first time I ever got rated as a jock only because it also marked the very first time the station ever got rated - be it Arbitron, Birch, Pulse or Hooper - and I was the station winner for that book! Say what you want, but I'll never part with them.

Granted, my radio "career" (ha, ha, ha) didn't turn out the way I wanted it, but I'll always have that. Again, say what you want. :)

Hey it's Jon Howe I worked at KC101 back in the early-mid 80's. I left CT in 1986 and moved to Daytona Beach and did mornings at I-100 for 4-years (FUN TIME!). Nice to see and hear names from the past...now I've got to go and find them on Facebook!

Jon Howe...did you work at WKSS-FM, too? I have an old WKSS-FM ad on tape dubbed from 1986, which involved racing at the old Riverside Park in Agawam, MA.
