KCAL Adds Morning Block as KCBS Double Pumps ‘CBS Mornings’

In this lineup CBS will have the 4am-11am stretch of KCAL9 News in the morning.

CBS-owned Los Angeles TV stations KCAL and KCBS are set to shakeup the local news landscape in the fall with a programming flip that will bring the first-ever morning newscasts to KCAL.

KCAL will carry seven hours of news, starting at 4 a.m. and stretching to 11 a.m. KCBS-TV (CBS2) has long carried local news from 4 a.m. to 7 a.m., followed by the West coast feed of network morning show “CBS Mornings” from 7-9 a.m.

I wonder if stations like KPIX might follow suit?

And it’s too bad WBBM doesn’t have a duopoly partner…they could try airing CBS Mornings from 6-8 and the other station could air local news during that time and WBBM could come back with local news at 8am. Maybe some Central Time stations could try that.

I can see KOVR Sacramento do the same as seen in this example given that they own a CW affiliate too. WCBS too with WLNY.

Not the first-ever morning newscast for KCAL...early in the Disney era, they had a 6am newscast they tried for a couple years until they turned that hour back to children's shows and/or religious junk. That said though...I actually thought they should have had morning news on KCAL long ago, back when CBS took over the station in 2002, given how news-centric that station has always been (at least since the Disney years).

WCBS too with WLNY.
It’s to no benefit for an East Coast station to run the West Coast edition of CBS Mornings at 10am, the news is 3 hours old. If they did it would have to be on WLNY. Well that might work.

Since it's paid time, I imagine the 11am-Noon hour is slotted for The 700 Club.
If they put 700 Club at 11am, then Judge Judy can replace Funny You Should Ask from 5-6pm.

So they are canceling all of their Judges shows and 700 club. Sounds like they are trying to ho head to head against KTLA
They haven’t released their fall lineup other than the 4am-11am news. They might just be moving them to a different time.

You have to create a free account. It doesn’t ask for a credit card or any other form of payment.

But you only get limited free articles. In other words, still going through a paywall and that's my point.

Jamie Yuccas named to be an anchor at KCAL9 News while she continues her role at CBS News. She is one of the CBS News Correspondents who also anchor local news at the same time.

CBS News correspondent Jamie Yuccas has been named an anchor on the KCAL Los Angeles morning program. She will anchor the 7-10 a.m. portion of the show, which will run 4 to 11 a.m. Yuccas has also been named an anchor at the CBS News Los Angeles streaming channel.

Part of CBS News and Stations, KCAL has not announced a start date for the morning program, other than it being a fall premiere. KCAL has never had weekday morning news.Yuccas will continue to be a correspondent at CBS News, and a guest co-host on CBS Mornings. She will remain at the CBS Broadcast Center in Studio City, California, home base for KCBS-KCAL and the CBS News West Coast bureau. She will also continue to host episodes of Nickelodeon’s Nick News.

They can buy WCIU and if Nexstar buys CW and moves back to WGN they can make a primetime 7-9pm news like KCAL

Another Update Erik Candini joins CBS Los Angeles as director of brand strategy in October.

Erik Candiani has been named director of brand strategy & management for KCBS and KCAL, the CBS Los Angeles duopoly, according to a memo to the staff by Joel Vilmenay, the stations’ GM.

The memo says Candiani will be responsible for helping to build and manage a clear brand strategy for the Los Angeles properties. He will work closely with the team to develop and deploy strategic external and internal marketing campaigns across all platforms, including linear, digital and streaming.

No launch date announced yet for the move to KCAL/4am CBS Mornings on KCBS.

So I still don’t see any sign of an expanded News schedule on KCAL. What happened? I mean “coming this fall” and it’s already November. Did they change their minds?
