KCRA fires five Friday, 1/26-Preparation for new KQCA morning news show

January 26, 2007

Late Friday, Bee Media Savvy guy Sam McMannis reports that KCRA canned reporter Mike Bond, two photographers, a videotape editor and another news employee today... in preparation for a new morning newscast on sister station KQCA (My 58.) A night assignment editor is out the door when his contract expires at the end of February.

KCRA/KQCA President Elliott Troshinsky told McMannis there will be new hires for the 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. broadcast, but that it "will need a different type of staff than what we currently have,” and that they'll do the KCRA news with the remaining staff. The KQCA broadcast begins in March.

11 p.m. news producer Carolyn Thomas is jumping soon from the Hearst-Argyle property to executive produce CBS 13's morning news.

Bond was a fixture at KTXL, Fox 40 before his tenure there ended and he was hired by KCRA.

Oh for the love of God, please do not let them look like KRON4 in San Francisco and have VJ's (Video Journalists) instead of actuall reporters. Say it isn't so!

Another longtime KCRA Employee was terminated two weeks ago. Gary Tomsic, who has been at KCRA since May 21, 1968 was terminated. Gary worked behind the scenes at KCRA. Former Creature Features Host, Bob Wilkins, was instrumental in getting Gary his job at KCRA. Gary also specialized in making 16mm short films, often in the horror genre. Also Gary created the robot, 2T2, for the "Captain Cosmic" show for KTVU-2 Oakland in the 1970's.

KCRA has NEVER been vulnerable like this. Jon Kelly never
would have allowed it. They are still #1, but if KXTV or KOVR
actually got a clue, they could go in for the kill and destroy
KCRA.

Goliath is falling.

Dang... that's hard to hear. in 1979, I worked for Gary for a while when he had ETC (Ermet, Tomsic and Cooper) in the Bill Rase Building on Venture Court. He was shooting a lot of the Crystal Dairy and Raley's spots for director Mike Grasso, and doing other film-based projects.

He was the commercial cinematographer at KCRA-TV before leaving in the mid-70's. His career took him to Saudi Arabia for a while, then back to Sacramento where he teamed up with two friends to form ETC.

Since then he opened SPOT Services, (Sacramento Producers of Television) which grew into a fair-sized firm.

He chose to simplify and returned to KCRA while pursuing projects that interested him... including Director of Photography on several independent features.

I last chatted with him at a Final Cut Pro user group meeting in Folsom last fall. He had to duck out early because he'd been called in to work... at KCRA.

Perhaps this will give him the time to shoot some other projects he was interested in.

Ted.

That new newscast debuted this morning with Chris "I Never Met A TelePrompTer I Couldn't Misread" Riva and Deirdre Fitzpatrick anchoring. I saw very little that was different between the two hours of KCRA News on MY58 (other than some lame food and feature stuff) and the two preceeding hours on KCRA-3.

For this, Mike Bond and the others got canned?

Okay, I know it was only the first show...but really -- from a shop with KCRA's reputation, I expected better.
