KCSN Strikes Radio Gold Again! Of Course, Most of LA Still Can't Hear It...

Spent some time listening to KCSN this afternoon as I was bumping around town and noted they played "Ways to Be Wicked" from Lone Justice's self-titled album released in 1985 - another excellent gold pull! Way to go Sky!

Of course I'm partial to this one as I think this is simply one of the greatest albums ever and particularly in the Country Rock genre, or as it was sometimes known then, "CowPunk". Maria McKee, the lead singer went on to make one more record with Lone Justice ("Shelter") and several solo albums, all of which are fine, but none can top the 10 songs of Cowpunk genius that is this first record. If you want to hear what great country rock sounds like with an amazing vocalist who can cover everything from the sweetest ballad to country gospel/soul to absolute kick-ass country rockers, do yourself a favor and give the CD a spin (or two!).

If you need a bit more prodding, know that the the hit single (such as it was), "Ways to be Wicked" was actually penned by Tom Petty who gave it to the band. Tom told Maria, a very spiritual lady, not to worry about the line in the song that says "you ain't afraid to stick it in" - no one would get a double entendre out of that. So they go on tour and guess what everyone asks her about? Yep. Secondly, Petty's excellent piano player Benmont Tench is all over the record and  could have been the necessary influence to hold the short-lived version of the band together just long enough to make this great record and tour to promote it.

Unfortunately the number of people that heard the song aired today (or any part of the KCSN schedule for that matter) is probably less than the average attendance at a minor league baseball game. It is an LA station but it cannot be heard in downtown LA, or most of the basin that is not in the Valley. Even IN the valley, the signal can sometimes be elusive. Sky, you promised a significant upgrade in April, where is it?

I've been listening this month during the day at work in Van Nuys.....Kinda like it as there is no commercials and limited promos......The music mix is kinda all over the place but different than anything else on right now.....

I Do Get Frustrated When I Get South Of The Galleria On Hawthorne Blvd. ::) But KCSN Is My Personal Choice and Someday I Wish They Get A Stronger Signal Toward The South Bay (Wishful Thinking) Joe G

Joe, if you don't have an iPhone, get one, download the TuneIn app, fire up KCSN, connect the phone to your car stereo, and your wish will have been granted!

Flipper and friends. The signal upgrade is a couple weeks away. Will bring signal across the LA basin. through silverlake and Downtown. Will also improve the reception in the hills through Palisades and Eagle Rock utilizing circular polarization. Very nice increase. A third translator is in works. Plus, a major fourth growth opportunity.

New scaleable website design coming for smartphone and tablets. iHeartRadio has chosen KCSN to be a Featured Station on their platform beginning June 1st.

We keep doing everything we can to improve the signal. Now take the KCSN Listener Survey at www.kcsn.org. Let us know what you want to hear! As you know, I respect the passion of Radio-info members and pay attention.

P.S. Maria friended me on Facebook, Flipper--which is nice...

Sky D. Sky, I Guess We'll Be Looking Forward To It. Until Then... I Do Listen on my iPhone thru Wunderradio. I refuse to use iHeartRadio so please don't remove KSCN from other players.

Yes, I suppose that is nice. You probably get lots of requests as the PD of the coolest station in LA. You know, the one that only the "in" crowd knows about, like KROQ back in the day before it blew up, or more recently, Indie.

Unless it can get into OC where there is a large "other" contingent - you won't see much movement ratings wise.

KCSN is not really ratings driven-but those might build with L.A. basin signal now reaching eastside early adopters and deep into the Hollywood Hills/Palisades, Malibu etc. Depends on if Arbitron reaches upscale, discerning listeners. We have a number of underwriters who are telling us we are effective buys in 'moving the needle' in ROI.

We have identified potential signal opportunities in the O.C. and far West Valley.

Our goal is to drive partronage, which has grown significantly in last ten months. Thanks to all of you who are not just listeners, but supporters.

Look for three exciting announcements in next two weeks.

Are they tweaking the signal even now as we write? I noticed a much stronger signal today. I spend most of my time in the outermost areas of the usable signal, so some days the signal is better than others, with weather generally being the main variable. Perhaps that was all this was today, or maybe...

Has anyone else noticed the very tinny-like, sound quality when streaming on iHeart? Comparing the KCSN stream on iHeart vs. directly via KCSN.org is like comparing the sound quality between a transistor radio and a fully equipped home sound system. I have tried to stream KCSN on iHeart using different browsers as well (IE9 & Chrome) but the effect is the same.

Regarding signal, happy to hear of the efforts in place, but as I am in Long Beach, I imagine that none of them will impact in-car reception here in this part of the county. I have noticed a very clear signal in West LA, which I presume is due to a booster located, I believe, near the Museum of Tolerance on Pico.

Programming idea - Sky, any chance that KCSN will launch a countdown show of the current top hits in AAA, similar to Spectrum on SiriusXM's weekly "Baker's Dozen" show? Here is their chart from this past week, as posted on Facebook [https://www.facebook.com/SiriusXMTheSpectrum]:

Baker's Dozen [6/2/12] - by SiriusXM The Spectrum on Monday, June 4, 2012:
1 Jack White – Love Interruption
2 The Lumineers – Ho Hey
3 David Gray – Money (That’s What I Want)
4 Electric Guest – This Head That I Hold
5 ZZ Ward – Put The Gun Down
6 Blind Pilot – Half Moon
7 Keane – Silenced By The Night
8 Brandi Carlile – That Wasn’t Me
9 Neil Young & Crazy Horse – Oh Susannah
10 Alabama Shakes – Hold On
11 Counting Crows – Untitled (Love Song)
12 Glen Hansard – Love Don’t Leave Me Waiting
13 Emeli Sande – Next To Me

I have heard only some of these on KCSN - not the David Gray, Electric Guest, Blind Pilot, Neil Young & Crazy Horse (other tracks but not Oh Susannah), Alabama Shakes (heard I Found You but not Hold On), or Glen Hansard.

"Has anyone else noticed the very tinny-like, sound quality when streaming on iHeart?"

Agreed. Doesn't sound like they're getting much bandwidth love there, especially compared to their Shoutcast stream, which sounds very nice indeed.

The Radio-Info Board does not miss a trick!

the Orban processor was out of phase. it is now fixed. Please let us know that it sounds better.
