I haven't been saying anything about it, but I have been seeing some comments about what Power 98.3 KKFR has been doing on Friday nights, and I am aware of the type of stuff they've been playing.
I've just been secretly not saying anything and waiting the entire week for Friday night to see what would happen because before getting to actually hear the show last night for myself, I couldn't believe what my eyes were seeing. I saw some talk about a dance/electro-pop show on KKFR on Friday nights, then checked yes.com and I had to go to Walgreens to buy a pair of glasses because I wasn't sure if I was seeing properly!
SO, NOW WITH THAT BEING SAID,
I do have a few comments I'd like to add of my own about the electro-hip hop / dance show mixed by Dj Astonish on Power 98.3 on Friday nights. First, let me just say I am glad that they are doing it, and I'm happy that out of all, they at least had the decency to think outside the box a bit and try something new at a reasonable time, BUT.. I do have a few issues about how the dance show is done.
1. THEY HAVE NO INTRODUCTION TO THE MIX.
Well, there are a few pro's and cons to this. First off, Friday's on Power 98.3 are considered "Fiesta Friday's", where they mix from 12 noon to around 4am the next morning, so when you're mixing all day, you cannot tell when a new show has begun without an intro or announcement, so no one can tell what's going on. The good thing about this is that without warning people of what's to come, you may keep many of those same unsuspecting listeners who might keep listening and discover "hey, I like this" that propably would have run away like a mouse if they were warned before hand. The bad thing about this, it doesn't give anyone a chance to set a time to tune in to that specific program because most people will not realize that there is actually a show of it's own during that time slot, and even more, people may not even think anything of it because the entire thing just seems like one large mix, so "big deal! I've heard mixes before - nothing new - doesn't matter whether or not I tune in at any particular time.." I do notice that they do, however, have an intro (and advertisements) to The Pulse, which is the underground hip hop show that follows afterwards starting at 1am.
2. THEY COULDN'T FIND A "NORMAL" SOUNDING ON-AIR PERSONALITY TO HOST THE SHOW.
So, they are doing a dance show on Power 98.3, featuring electro hip hop and pop. Great, right? But then what do they do? They of course have to find this gay sounding on air personality to host the show, only to feed the stereotype that dance music is for gays, and on top of this, alienate the rest of the people who are already close minded with their beliefs so they can find one more additional reason to THINK "this is corny" and go elsewhere on the dial. They couldn't just make the dance show sound "normal" like the rest of the programs throughout the day/week, on-air personality-wise, so therefore not only does the music stand out, but the host does, too, so of course people are automatically think subconsciously that "this is different, therefore, does not fit in" which translates to most people as "weird". With that being said, 101.5 JamZ would've been the best place to do a show like this because they would've done it much better. KZZP, while being the most appropriate place for this, would've probably done the same exact thing as Power. KKFR should have either
A. Made the on air personality of the dance show sound no different from the rest of the programs, or
B. Have "gay sounding" on airs throughout the ENTIRE day, instead of just stereotyping the dance portion.
I also can do without the blowing a "muah" kiss at the end of everything the host has to say during that program.
3. Actually, that pretty much wraps it up. Other than that I think it's a good thing they are doing the show, especially at a decent time, as oppose to some unknown early morning time that most people haven't heard of. Amazingly, they do it starting at 10pm instead of 1 or 2am, THEN the underground hip hop show FOLLOWS it, instead of vice versa. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come, and hopefully if they continue adding dj's to the team, they'll eventually replace a certain two they have right now that are just absolutely terrible. Very odd how KZON has the better dj's, but KZON is the one who doesn't mix often.
