Kelly Nash from NOK PM Drive to COS Wakeups w JR

Now I find this really interesting and still wonder why Double O just did not take WWNU CHR to go against WNOK. I like the lite AC format there but find the morning show with Tim Miller rather bland at times, and look forward to hearing Kelly Nash with Jonathan Rush Monday morning and that may be the spark WCOS was looking for.

Adult CHR would have been a perfect flanker. It would leave NOK no room to go anywhere except younger or more urban and force Boring 106 to finally take a position in the market, which it has not done for a decade.

Although not related, the last book, 92 almost had a 3 share 12+. Cut that in half this trend (with the usual disclaimers). 94.3 up, but well within the margin of statistical error.

WSCZ is a no show still, but achieved enough to be In Tab for Lexington County (but not Richland).

Also, did you notice some of the Urban shares are shrinking? WXBT is on a downward spiral as well as WLXC. Is this a sign of change in the Columbia market or more of the same? Country WCOS is way up thanks to WWNU flipping.

It also makes me wonder if WCOS will get stronger numbers because of Kelly Nash joing Rush in the mornings at WCOS. I think WWNU flipping has only strengthened WCOS and you have to admit even with some voice tracking, WCOS sounds really nice and polished.

This is a trend, so I don't read too much into what appears to be gaining/shrinking of ethnic or age segments. Trends are not statistically weighted, so they are affected by diary placement and return rates. When the book comes out, that's another matter. The book will be interesting to see what momentum (if any) the Double O stations will have.

The folks here at the office are SICK that we have to buy WCOS and deal with their arrogance again!
We were even sicker when the last ARB's came out and New beat COS in women.

Dude-There is no definition per se of negative momentum....The change was not a strategy for WWNU. The format is based on The Dove in the Tampa area...only because "I don't know anything about country music" or managing people or stations. The format will burn eventually...hopefully before new management arrives....

I haven't looked at The Dove's playlist lately but surely not. The Dove used to sound better than that. I sincerely hope the people in the Tampa area aren't stuck with this. I remember another station in that area which was much better but it's gone now. They really need it back.

Wait, correction. According to Wikipedia Clear Channel owns the station and it IS playing good music. Both details should make us suspicious ...

I wish I knew as much about radio as you think you do.

You are correct, I haven't learned squat about the business taking a subpar non-comm signal, which was built from the ground up, made it self-supporting, won a few minor community awards and in the process put a dent in a couple full-power commercial signals. Should go back to school and sit at your feet.

Hammer5 Flashback Time: "I hear TJ McKay at Citadel has been interviewing potential talent for a Churban format. Would would that do to the market, especially Clear Channel (The Beat and WNOK). That would be a great combo buy with their other Urban WLXC. Like the old saying goes, I guess two Urbans are better than one."

We could turn this into a flame contest, but I don't have the time...nor do I care to go back and find rumors that you've posted here that turned out to not be true. We all hear things...we come here to share. Some are turn out true, most do not.

I posted what I did because it seems you have an agenda against b106...seems odd considering that the station has won numerous awards, contributed a great deal to the community, and still has local programming around the clock.

Oh well...

No secret there, consultant-man. Never liked B106. I didn't when I was across the street 20 years and still don't. Like and admire a lot of the people on air there. Understand why people like them. I never have and probably never will. Not my cup of tea, and I don't have enough gray hair (or hair for that matter) to be a mainstream AC listener.

I understand why WTCB win awards, too. Some are for the good things they've done. Some are because the VP/GM is very prominent in the broadcast community and has a lot of respect from the folks that make such decisions. Not saying that is negative, but it is how it is.

Second, you know as well as I, that if you are not Citadel, at this juncture B106 is back to being one of the non-ethnic stations to beat in both shares and revenue. That's just how it is. Nothing personal in that, hunt where the prey is.

If I were in charge of B106 I think I'd really have to look at what I had...and I don't think I'd be very happy.
Sure they win awards, but they sit in the middle of the pack ratings wise. The fact that 106 isn't in the top 3 stations every single book is a disgrace. For the first time this year their trends are in the 5's!( I think that's because something stupid is going on with NOK).

Seriously, they are banking on their reputation in the market for revenue...If they didn't have that they'd be overlooked by a lot of dollars who only buy three or four deep.

Looks like mediocrity is king in this market.

BTW, back to the original discussion. I am hearing a lot of clients who are not at all happy with Nash on COS. They can't stand JR but say that KN is the nail in the coffin. I'm running out of morning shows to spend money on!

JOJA that is interesting. Kelly Nash brought a lot of needed energy back to the Morning Rush on NOK. A lot of times I get the sense that JR is/was just phoning it in and biding his time. When KN was brought in, it really seems to give JR a new jolt of energy and renewed purpose. JR doesn't like me one bit (and I can live with that), but I have always said when Jonathan is firing on all cylinders and giving it his A-Game, he's pretty much unbeatable. Sadly, in the past 5 years, those moments are less than what they were 10 years ago. I can help but speculate all the turmoil on ownership and cost-cutting has affected him. Then again, who wouldn't it affect?

I have noticed since Nash joined the Morning Rush that it seems like there is more energy and more fun to listen to. Frankly before he came in the Morning Rush on COS was boring as heck. I would love to have seen what kind of ratings battle could ahve happened between JR and Jeff Roper if he had been given the full reins of WWNU.

Apples and Oranges!!! When JR was in his heyday...which is what everybody seem to be compairing him to...how many people were on the show? He had a CAST of characters helping him out. Same with Roper (who according to a young lady I know who used to work with him DID have full reigns of WWNU). Now you want to say that there is more energy on the show because KN showed up...ya think? You could put ANYBODY on that show with a teaspoon of talent or a thimble full of personality and it would sound more exciting. What would Stern sound like if it were just him yacking away for four hours? You damned sure wouldn't subscribe to XM to hear that.

I'm saying having Kelly on has caused JR to wake up and put more effort into the program.

And that is not a slam, it seems that JR just needs to have the right person teamed with him to perform closer to his potential.
