Kelly West and Bobby Quinn Fired from WARM 103 today

You know, Kelly West, airbrushed billboards and all, was yet another example of a person who was forcefed a steady diet of over-hyped starpower at Susquehanna and, combined with great ratings while working with Rick Sten and John London, eventually became the uncontrollable ego-monster she was when fired the first time. When she returned under Cumulus and Dave Russell, she seemed to have taken a different approach. Perhaps a humbling reality check was what was needed to bring about a dose of humanity within her.

However she did make life a living hell for many while she was in "power" at WARM, and even had one person so wrecked emotionally that they would throw up in the parking lot and dread the thought of even coming to work while she was in charge. NO ONE should ever be allowed t corrupt a station like that. No one. Somemention Karma, and some know it is corporate downsizing, the economy, but whatever it is...for some it's finally OVER.

I am convinced that the majority of the people who post on these boards have never had any success in this business and are otherwise "Monday morning quarterbacks"

Most seem bitter and have and axe to grind!

The reality is in this market and a lot of others... "RADIO SUCKS!"

Please ...list me some " COMPELLING REAL TALENTS" that are still on the air in the market....

and as the great Katt Williams would say...

"Don't worry...I'll Wait!....

Sorry to hear about Kelly and Bobby. So now there are two more (aged 40 or 50+) radio pros on the street in South Central PA. Anyone keeping count of the radio fatalities in the last couple of years? Must be a dozen or more by now.

A couple of weeks ago WXPN played Harry Chapin's old song about the ups and (mostly) downs of the radio biz, "W O L D." The guy in the song ("feeling all of 45, going on 15") is pathetic, but as I listened to the song it occurred to me that, pathetic as he was, nowadays he would be considered lucky. He at least has a morning gig! Were he still with us, Harry could update that song where the guy has been replaced by automation and is working at Wal-Mart.

What ever happened to you John...I used to hear you a lot on 1 0 1 ?...

OK...I'll play along

Dennis & Michelle at the Rose
Nancy & Newman at Bob
The People's Morning Show on the X
Rick & Diane at Mix
Murph & Casey at IOV

I'd put all 5 of these shows up against what WARM has offered in the past couple of years.

And certainly what's on the air there now. And these 5 shows have one thing in common. The talents all come across as real people.

Nothing Compelling about any of those mentioned shows! ESPECIALLY 101.3?...Have you seen the ratings decline?

The ONLY show you mention to have HBG/YORK/Lancaster ratings is on the x.

and dear radio babe. I am enjoying great success in this business, in fact there are alot of people enjoying greater success than ever because they are easy to work with, and can multi task, a concept which has been lost in corporate radio's find a warm body approach.
Those that can adapt will always have a job. You can't see a steady ratings decline, and act like your the best thing that ever cracked a mic in ..lets see ..oh yeah market 100 something. Thanks, I'm doing well here in market 8. I remember how lucky I am every day to have a job in this business, and right there is the key. I think Tracey is doing a fantastic job at WARM, and everyone there from the traffic guy to the news guy (kelly's husband) sounds a helluva lot happier. :D

This is getting nasty. I will say that I think Traci is sounding great. It still does not sound like they are marketing a new morning show, which makes me think it may be temporary. I listened yesterday during PM drive and Bobby D. sounded on his game. Sounded like he wanted to be there. Musically...I think the focus on the demo has improved....but I still think there is a branding problem. The name WARM still makes people think of Neil Diamond and Jim Croce.....whom you can hear on WSOX.

Which makes one think that they're still not done yet. Perhaps everyone is happier because Kelly has left the building. Tough to give up on a brand that has been around for so long. But the name potentially is a problem.

As for the 5 morning shows that I mentioned as being "compelling", I'll stand by what I said. We weren't talking ratings. That wasn't what was asked.
You don't think Murph & Casey or Nancy or Newman are talented? Come on. I'll stand by the others shows as well. I think the guy who posted from the Peak earlier was right on. With all 5 shows, we know something about the players. That's part of what makes them real people. And just not some rip and read of the show prep everyday.

Seltzer.....you just hit the nail on the head. Everybody seems to be using the same show prep. How much impossible trivia can be done on multiple stations. Listeners want to hear about the families of the people they hear on the radio. What did they do over the weekend with the kids. How did that soccer or little league game go. How did the back to school shopping go. Topics like this can provide the perfect setting for listener comments and provide a chuckle during those long commutes. We can all relate to these real life stories. This way you always have some content that listeners can relate to.....instead of having to wait around for Kanye West to have another meltdown at an awards show.

Boss Jock,

Great comments. That's exactly what I was talking about. These are the kinds of things no IPOD, satellite radio, or website can provide. This is what makes local radio GREAT. Problem is, it does take some work and preparation. It's serving your audience. It's giving them something they can't find anywhere else. Nothing wrong with talking about Kanye West. But, turn it around. If you saw this, (and I imagine many morning shows watched some of the VMA's), what did you think? What did your kids think? When was the last time somebody treated you this rudely? There are many ways to personalize this. Again, it comes back to preparation and..some thought.

Murph & Casey at IOV...Really? Sounds stiff and canned to me. As if they practice the bits. Casey can barely read the news (clearly rip and read) and obviously knows nothing about sports and it shows in her delivery. All of the interaction sounds forced....at least to me.

I'd have to guess that Seltzer has a "horse in the race" at Hall with his first choice of 101.3's morning show and Bill Baldwin as a great GM?...

Hello????.....

Actually, if I were going to try to take on WGTY, Murf and Casey is who I would go after for AM drive. My GF listens to them after tiring of Donato. I think they sound good together and Murf knows how to sell sponsorship liners, too---the ACE hardware sponsor on "Water Cooler College" at 8:09--which she NEVER misses---has some kind of different funny twist every day---it at least shows he puts a little thought into it. I find them pleasant.

Actually the 5 morning shows I listed were not put in any particular order.

I don't know if Bill Baldwin is a great GM or not. But Hall is a non public company. Not "wall street" driven. Ad sales are down for them as well but..funny...nobody has lost their job in the past year I'm aware of. Cumulus in York and Harrisburg certainly can't say that. Citadel as well.

The best thing that could happen is for Cumulus and these other publicly traded companies to crash. New local owners could pick up the pieces and perhaps some who are out of work would fine jobs again.

According to a "friend", the Cumulus York cluster IS being shopped around BUT the debt is SO big that NO ONE will buy unless MAJOR concessions can be met. Look for more syndicated shows AND more layoffs by Christmas...

Major concessions. Wonder what those could be?

It would be a step in the right direction if a "privately owned" company could get this cluster.

If this is true, then this explains greatly the "bloodletting" of talent that has been shown the door lately. Make the books look better
for a potential buyer.

A major concession would be Cumulus having an asking price that is more in line with what the stations are worth now, not what they might have been worth several years ago, before the economy slump. Prices are often set by a multiple of either the gross sales or the cash flow. If both are down, and the multiple is still high, the cluster is not worth now what Cumulus paid for it several years ago. WSOX was purchased for around 24 million alone by Susquehanna.
