Kentucky Derby will not be broadcasted on Philadelphia radio again?

I'm very angry that radio listeners in the city of Philadelphia will not be able to hear ESPN Radio's coverage of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday. This event as well as the Belmont and Preakness (which may not be on national radio this year) should have stayed on westwood one so it will be available nationwide to any station that wants to air it. I don't know if this is true or not but Since ESPN Radio has the national radio rights to the derby, it will be only broadcasted on ESPN Radio stations and some of them have poor signals like WPHY 920 AM in Trenton and I don't think 920 AM will air the race because of the Phillies/Giants Game on Saturday . ESPN Radio should make its feed available to non ESPN Radio stations. This is a joke that this had to happen. Thoughts?

Who needs to hear a horse race on the radio when you can watch it on TV? Even a cab driver or a patrol officer who wants to see the race can pull over at a bar and watch it. It only lasts 2 minutes, and the other three hours of coverage is commercials and filler.

hmmm, Julius. . .very interesting since 920-ESPN Radio claims to be the home for "ALL Phillies" games. how is that going to happen???
Phillies @ San Francisco Sat. May 5th first pitch at 3:55 P.M. (FOX-TV game) Kentucky Derby post time is around 6:25 P.M. where will they put the Derby? or where will they put the Phillies? hmmm, call Nassau!

In the words of Don Imus: "Please, stop it."

Hey, Julius...I hear that "Davey" Jones, the State Trooper who exposed one of the Jersey Guys home addresses on TV, is responsible for the Kentucky Derby not being carried on Philadelphia radio. Please write to him. Thank you.

Here's the listing from the Kentucky Derby Website of the radio stations across the nation that will be airing the ESPN radio coverage. Yes, it appears that 920 WPHY will be the Philly radio voice for the Derby. It also appears that none of the Wilmington, Dover DE, or Atlantic City stations will be carrying the race either, but I noticed that Harrisburg PA, Baltimore MD, NYC, and Washington DC will have radio coverage. As someone already said, the actual race is only 2 minutes long, so for those two minutes turn off the radio and watch it on TV.

This thread is hilarious!

FWIW I neither watched nor listened to the Run for the Roses last year. I was in Boston's Prudential Center mall eating a hot dog in the food court after seeing Fenway Park from the top of that tower.

Also, my guess is we'll not hear live coverage of Wimbilton's world Tennis events on Philly radio, or for that matter any other radio station. My guess is even the BBC in England doesn't do live coverage of Wimbilton. What exciting and compelling radio a tennis match would be. I can hear the sportscaster saying as you hear the "bong" ......."bong"......."Bong" of the tennis ball being hit back and forth, "Here we are in Wimbilton for this annual tennis event. The action is moving from left to right on your radio dial."

I don't think we'll be hearing live coverage of the PGA or the LPGA on any area radio stations either. Notice, that there aren't any radio stations that carry a version of "Bowling for Dollars" either. Man would that be a sleeper.

Hey I love radio and listen far more often than I watch TV in any given week, but there are some events that just do not lend themselves to being broadcast on radio. So when those events come about, it's time to dust off the television, park it in a comfortable chair, and watch.

NOT kidding; Wimbeldon WAS on a large network of radio statins for a few years (I believe in the late 70's).

Re: Kentucky Derby will not be broadcast on Philadelphia radio again?

In the early '70's WVPO-FM in Stroudsburg (now the new home of Lite 93.5) DID broadcast live bowling games on the air from a local bowling alley. The commentary was just as you could imagine it.
For the record, WNPV Lansdale carries the Indy 500 and the qualifying live the week before.
I have no idea who the local affiliate is for the Boston Marathon, or even the Crisfield, Md. Hard Crab Festival Crab Races (WDMV 540 in Pocomoke City, Md. used to broadcast them before it got sold years ago.)

The Indy 500 is on something like as thousand radio stations. My 4 Indiana stations cleared a few k every year. A Very easy sell, there.

Back in the early 90's, the station I was OM for carried the Indy 500. I am not a fan of car racing, but the coverage was interesting. The commentary would hold you. For an event that lasts that long, radio offers a good option. You can take a break from the TV, get in the car and run some errands, and still keep up with what is going on. The same with the NFL and baseball. Radio does have something to offer for those who do not want to stay glued to the TV for 3 or 4 hours.

But getting back to the topic of this thread, a two minute race on the radio is not practical, unless you are a toll booth collector on I-95 and can't get to a television. For golf and tennis, the KYW's and WINS' of this world keep you posted during their sports reports.

Actually, Wimbledon was carried last year on Sirius Satellite Radio (they carried a feed from either BBC radio or some other British source). I had to tune it in for a minute because I couldn't possibly imagine how tennis play-by-play on radio could be anything other than "Smith hits it over, Jones hits it back, Smith hits it back, Jones hits it back." Actually, the fast talking PBP was VERY descriptive and painted a very detailed picture. I still wouldn't listen to it on the radio even if I didn't have TV, but the broadcast was proof that good broadcasters make a good broadcast, no matter how dull the material.

If they can make tennis sound good on the radio I guess that means we could even hear Italian Lawn Bowling, and Croquet' some time. Old Number 7 is correct, a good broadcaster can make even something like Croquet' sound interesting. Also the local interest in the "sport" being carried would make a difference. Last year's Kentucky Derby had plenty of local interest in the Philly/Wilmington area with Barbaro running for example.

I remember listening to the Indy 500 on Q95 in Indianapolis a number of years ago - the legal ID had a sponsor tag.
