When did American Samoa's 93KHJ get a permit from either Liebmann Broadcasting the owners of 930 KHJ AM Los Angeles and CBS KRTH K-Earth 101.1 the with the Intellectual property of Boss Radio.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KHJ_(AM)

http://www.wkhj.com/
http://www.khj.ca/
The Other KHJ's like CKHJ in Canada resembles the 1980's when 93KHJ LA went Country.
the WKHJ in Maryland is HotAC like KKIQ, KUIC, KKIS and KKDV here in Northern California.

No permit needed. Lieberman bought what was then KRTH-AM and went Spanish with it. While they restored the KHJ call letters (after a decade as KKHJ), they have never marketed themselves as "93/KHJ", and there is no intellectual property.

KRTH-FM's current owner, CBS, has no intellectual property claim to 93/KHJ, either. The two stations have been under separate ownership for more than 20 years. If a station called themselves "K-Earth", they'd have a case.

That's right. The American Samoa station is "93KHJ," which they state very clearly in their "History" page is named in honor of the legendary Los Angeles station. Whether or not they got permission is anybody's guess - but I doubt anybody is left to challenge it legally. Bill Drake did not hold any right to the brand - it was owned by RKO General, which is long gone. The call letters were also attached to RKO General's rather pitiful TV station - KHJ-TV Channel 9. That changed when Disney bought the station in the 80s and changed the calls to KCAL-TV. Liberman probably wouldn't care that some station in the far-away South Pacific is branding as "KHJ," especially considering their programming has nothing in common with an English language hit-music station.

I have heard the story that Liberman petitioned the FCC to change the calls from KKHJ back to KHJ, at least in part because "K-K" in Spanish is pronounced as "Ca-ca," which means the same as it does in English...slang for poop.

Another story I read somewhere regarding the origins of KHJ: When the station came on air in the 1920s, the call letters were probably assigned by the government, and likely meant nothing. But in the KHJ studios were 3 birds (parakeets, I think), who the listeners could hear singing during the programming. They were named Kindness, Happiness, and Joy.

I was looking for DJ's that only went to RKO Top 40 CHR or Oldies station from KHJ, CKLW, KRTH, WOR-FM, & WRKO

Very few KHJ jocks left there for another RKO station. The three I can think of: Tom Maule and Johnny Mitchell, who both went to KFRC (where Johnny became Sebastian Stone), and Walt "Baby" Love, who went to WOR-FM.

At CKLW, Charlie Van Dyke and Ed Mitchell went to KFRC (where Ed became Mark Elliott).

KRTH was automated until the early-mid 80s. I don't believe any KRTH jocks went to other RKO stations.

I can't think of a WOR-FM jock who left there for another RKO station.

And at WRKO, Shadoe Stevens, Jerry Butler and Johnny Williams went to KHJ (Johnny changed his name to Cat Simon because KHJ already had a Johnny Williams).

Charlie Fox worked at WRKO and almost a decade later would work at KHJ. I believe Frank Terry went to KFRC after KHJ, but I'm fuzzy on that. Chuck browning left KFRC for KHJ. Later the Chucker would go from RKO's WHBQ to K101 and then to KFRC again. Rick Shaw and Terry Nelson both worked at RKO's FM in NYC WXLO and then later went to KFRC. Shaw was there when it WOR-FM and WXLO. Danny Martinez also worked at WOR-FM before going to KHJ. Beau Weaver worked at KFRC and KHJ as well. Oh and Big Ron O'Brien worked at WXLO and later at WRKO. And don't forget Bobby Ocean who did time for RKO at both KFRC and KHJ. Dave Williams also PD'd and worked on air at WHBQ and later would program KRTH. Oh and I almost forgot Walt Baby Love who worked at WOR-FM and when it was WXLO and at KHJ and I believe CKLW too... Whew, wonder if I missed any? Oh yeah, Steve Clark worked at WOR-FM and before that KHJ.

Bryan: You may have covered them all. I kept my field narrow because recto101 seemed to be looking for KHJ, CKLW, KRTH, WRKO and WOR-FM jocks that went straight to another RKO station (if I understood him correctly).

As you note, there was a gap between Charlie Fox's gigs at WRKO and KHJ, Rick and Terry went elsewhere from WOR-FM/WXLO before going to KFRC, and I think the same is true of the others.

I didn't mention jocks who left KFRC for another RKO station because it wasn't on recto101's list, but KFRC to KHJ was the most common occurrence, with Chuck Browning, Mark Elliott, Jim Carson, Bobby Ocean, Shana, Beverly Fox and Mucho Morales all having made that move. Harry Nelson and Marvelous Mark McKay went directly from KFRC to WRKO, Harry more than once, and both went from WRKO directly back to KFRC.

And...I thought of one more jock who went from KHJ to KFRC...Bob Anthony.

Llew: The story is true. The argument Liberman made to the FCC to get them to waive policy and re-issue a three-letter call wasn't. And the FCC should have known that.

Yes, "KK" en Espanol is pronounced "Ca-Ca", and it does mean poop.

But...during the entire time Leiberman has owned 930 AM (22 years now), it's always been branded. "Radio Allegria" at the time of the petition to the FCC, "La Ranchera" now.

The only time the call letters were used were for the hourly legal ID...which, in accordance with FCC rules and regulations is given in English..."KKHJ, Los Angeles". The phrase "ca-ca" was never aired, and their audience never referred to them by their call letters. It was a problem that didn't exist, and the FCC bought it.

You're right Michael, many went elsewhere before going back to an RKO station. I should have read the earlier post better, my bad. And I realized after it was too late to correct that you already mentioned Walt Baby Love. Oh and I totally forgot about Bob Anthony, 62 KGW's Super-jock. I have a snippet of him somewhere on KHJ in my aircheck collection. I'm guessing his stay at the Big 93 was brief, same for his stint at K100. Yeah, KFRC was the common conduit to KHJ through the Drake farm system. Oh man, forgot Bob-KO Bailey/Beachin/Elliott who worked at KFRC and WOR-FM. Did Mark Driscoll work at WRKO? I know he worked at WOR-FM as did Harry Nelson who worked weekends for a while at 99X. My mentor Terry Nelson said that RKO would fly him in for a shift or two at XLO. He said that they used to bill them as the Nelson brothers. I had no idea Beverly Fox worked at KHJ, I learn something new everyday! Gotta say I've learned a lot reading post from you and Lew Keller.

Well, Bryan, forget I said it because I was wrong. It was Sally Adams, not Beverly Fox, who went from KFRC to KHJ. Hired by Michael Spears, she hung in for at least some of John Sebastian's tenure at KHJ.

It ran in cycles, but KYNO tended to feed KGB talent, KGB fed KFRC and KFRC fed KHJ.
