KFTY sold to Una Vez Más, to flip to Azteca América

B&C reports:

Una Vez Mas has agreed to acquire KFTY, which is licensed to Santa Rosa and serves the Bay Area, from High Plains Broadcasting and Newport Television....
KFTY currently airs Me-TV's classic programming and will become a Spanish-language Azteca America affiliate when the deal closes.

I wonder if Azteca America will drop KOFY-20.2 as an affiliate?

Well, I guess I was the only one who watched ME-TV on that station. ::) Wonder if KOFY TV 20 would consider picking up ME-TV..or if channel 38 would flip from RTV?

I'm also watching MeTv. I'm enjoying watching Svengoolie on Saturdays while Creepy KOFY Movietime is in repeats.
I wonder if Channel 8 up in Fort Bragg could switch to MeTV and then seek must carry for the entire Bay Area (I know they'd need to get their signal down to SF first)...

I wonder if KFTY can move their signal closer to San Francisco. You cannot picked up this station OTA unless you live in Sonoma County. I know its on Comcast Digital cable 31 and it isn't on Asound Cable in the bay area.

It is unlikely they can move closer to San Francisco because of KSMS in Monterey.

During the transition, they wanted to be allotted channel 22 in order to co-locate with KRCB. The FCC said no.

Having nothing better to do ( ;D), I decided to google "kemo" and "Spanish" to see if I could guess what they're going for here - if anything. "Kemo" is apparently a Spanish slang word that originates with "kemo sabe" - which was, of course, a Native American term of endearment and a greeting popularized by Tonto in The Lone Ranger.

On the other hand, "chemo" is Mexican slang for 'junkie.' I don't think they were going for that one - possibly the first. Or possibly neither of the above.

Wow KEMO was on 20 in the 1970's now its on 50. Wow I always think of Chemo more in the context of Cancer treatment.

I thought those were heritage calls in the Bay Area, but wasn't sure.

Calling anything to do with KEMO Channel 20 "heritage" is a stretch - the station was a joke until James Gabbert took it over in the 80s, first as KTZO, then KOFY-TV. If I remember correctly, the station was often dark, and may have gone dark permanently by the time Gabbert purchased it. I remember Gabbert stating in some interview that the studios were a mess, and the equipment antiquated and mostly non-functional.

I vaguely remember (at age 6 going on 7) that channel 20 was dark for at least a week before KTZO signed on in the fall of 1980; the local edition of TV Guide had a 'special programming note' at the top of almost every page of the listings that week.

KFTY began broadcasting in a Spanish language format sometime yesterday. The Me TV website has dropped all reference to KFTY. A new message on the site states that MeTV is negotiating with area broadcasters for a new affiliate, which is what they seem to have been doing for the past two months, without result.
