KFYI Rebranding To "Fox News Radio 550"?

Dr. Akbar said:
Thanks Professor Fybush...(snip)...And fyi - your class on Why Lumberyard 14~Forty
Can't Stay On At Night
in the spring semester is full with a long waiting list.

If Scott didn't have tenure at the Buckeye Media Hut before, he should now after his excellent
1230/550 coverage area dissertation. :)

Do you think the waiting list could be funneled into a companion class, perhaps taught by
catfish (with a "c")?

And perhaps if Phoenix radio execs had the same foresight as Albuquerque, Denver and Salt Lake City we too could have a ND 50kw full time station -- 'cept for our proximity to Mexico. Here we are the fifth largest city in the U.S. and the afore mentioned cities have the powerhouses. The Phoenix 550 license drops to 1kw nighttime, as if Bakersfield came first?

Let's see how this would play out. One of our posters wins the Power Ball lottery and has $$$ to burn.

He/she buys KUZZ in Bakerfield (550) and takes their nighttime power down to 1kw. He/she also buys KFYI and KOY (surely CC would sell) and flips them. The legal beagles apply for and get the Phoenix 550 to remain 5kw full time. Of course, nearly all the original KOY talent are now silent so more folks like Danny Davis are added to staff, relegating the FX to satellite nights.

Now I wake up -- and reality sets in. BTW: It's "55 Phoenix - K-O-Y" (No "IN") :)

Back to the "Fox News Radio 550 KFYI, KFYI-dot-com" topic...

The FYIers have been having a rough time of it on air this week.

News anchors are not yet comfortable with the new news wheel. As to what airs at the TOH,
one never knows whether it's going to be "Fox News Update," a one-minute Foxcast or a
two-minute Foxcast. (Of course all are "fair and balanced." ;D) I've heard some "updates"
and from certain time references given, I think they're recorded, perhaps from the BOH feed.

Production values have crashed at times. Ends of spots have been chopped just to hit the
El Rushbo theme at :06 after :)06:09 including the I-CRAP delay). That's not been an issue
before as they would just JIP the hour as the opening is padded. And several times today
both a local stopset and the network "fill" material aired simultaneously--for the entire break.

OK, I guess we'll have to move our spring session of "Why the Goldminers Run Down at Sundown" to the larger seminar room down the hall... :D

I have checked my numbers on 550's NIF with someone who actually knows what he's talking about, and my off-the-cuff estimates were slightly off, as it turns out. The interference level on 550 is low, but not as low as I thought: the "official" calculations say that KFYI needs about 4 mV/m to be heard over the din, but when one figures in Mexican AMs that may or may not be behaving according to the letter of the law, the real-world number is probably closer to 5 or 6 mV/m. That still gives 550 a quite impressive nighttime coverage area, though not quite as impressive as the Voice of the Wal-Mart Parking Lot on 6~Twenty, which has a somewhat higher NIF to overcome (just over 5 mV/m on paper), but also has more power at night.

As it works out, 550 and 620 cover almost identical amounts of land with theoretically interference-free signals at night; the difference is in 620's directional array, which pulls in signal over areas that have very little population (northwest toward Wickenburg and due east toward...um...very little of anything) and squeezes out more signal in what turn out to be more populous directions - northwest toward north Scottsdale, west toward the Media Hut and southeast toward Casa Grande, Coolidge and Florence. Not bad at all for a directional pattern that was designed when nobody lived in any of those places!

You're right, Fan of Oldies. To put the presentation in three words: it sucks! Alright...that was two, but that's our point - there's a big disconnect between what some CC genius thought would sound good and the actual on-air execution. And wassup with that Nameless, Faceless VO guy? The delivery is wrong, the sound is wrong and aside from branding with FOX News, what is the point of all this? If Nurse Jeff and I didn't know better, we'd think the brains behind KOOL playing All Xmas music a couple of years ago has found employment with CC.

Actually, PD Kris is now PDing at hot AC WLNK 107.9 Charlotte.

I have no idea whether or not it's been a "Link Kristmas" there since Halloween.

Meanwhile, I'll sit back and listen to Katfish (with a "K") Kris Kelly on KOOL with--
for now at least--only limited Christmas interruption.

Did I just hear a Mike Broomhead show promo into Barry Young's show, with an incorrect time announced?

And why does Barry Young sound different on radio from how he does in the stream? His voice sounds fuller on radio, but light & somewhat like a completely different person in the stream (unless you listen to the stream through headphones, where it will sound a bit more normal).

I also notice there is a glitch every single morning at the very end of the Wall Street Journal Report, when the show ends and is about to go into news from commercials. The end of the last commercial into the beginning of the news segment always repeats twice.
