KHHM/KNTY Sacramento Staffers Say Goodbye Ahead Of Format Changes

https://radioinsight.com/headlines/...staffers-say-goodbye-ahead-of-format-changes/

As word continues to spread about the upcoming changes to Country “101.9 The Wolf” KNTY Shingle Springs/“98.9 The Wolf” KCVR-FM Columbia/Modesto and Rhythmic CHR “Hot 103.5” KHHM Sacramento, a few of their staffers have taken to social media to bid farewell to their listeners.

KHHM morning host Jason ‘Sugabear’ Harris and KNTY midday host ‘Kimmy K’ Knox and APD/evening host Tracy Leighann Brimmer took to Instagram to announce that their stations will cease to exist this week and to thank their listeners.

Changes coming soon.

According to Country Aircheck:

Entravision KNTY/Sacramento will be flipping to a Regional Mexican format Monday (7/8). PD Tosh Jackson and MD/Promo Dir. Alex Guerra are remaining with the company through the end of the month;

CA points out that Sacramento previously had 3 country stations, and is now down to KNCI. iHeart flipped KBEB to Soft AC in November.

Unless they’re planning a flanker format or a simulcast, looks like Tricolor is going on 101.9. That leaves 99.9 potentially as a new format.

I’d be curious if out of this, we see a return of “Jose” branding somewhere and either talk en espanol or some niche English format.

Well, July 7, 2019, is the last day to hear 101.9 and 103.5 in their current formats. So far it’s music and VOs, and KHHM is still promoting a upcoming concert.

Here is an Update.

Entravision has begun the format realignment of its Sacramento cluster as Country “101.9 The Wolf” KNTY Shingle Springs has flipped to a simulcast of Regional Mexican “La Tricolor” 99.9 KRCX-FM Marysville.

The move gives the La Tricolor format full market coverage and makes Bonneville’s 105.1 KNCI the only full-powered Country outlet in the market. KNTY had a 2.0 share in the May 2019 Nielsen Audio ratings trailing KNCI’s 4.8, while iHeartMedia’s “107.1 The Bull” K296GB had a 0.6 share. KRCX-FM had a 1.5 share despite a signal that covered just a small portion of the market.

In addition to the exits reported below, Program Director Tosh Jackson and Music/Promotions Director Alex Guerra will exit the cluster at the end of the month.

Currently, 99.9 and 101.9 are simulcasting Tricolor.

104.3 and 98.9 are simulcasting Suavecita (I do believe)

103.5 is stunting as “Esa es 103.5...Your Summertime Party Station”. Very rhythmic product still and running English commercials (my guess is they have to blow out the English spot load from 103.5/101.9 — hence why the PDs are there for another few weeks).

As for country, I really can’t see anyone really excited to take the mantle of being the second-fiddle country station. The only thing I can think of is in another few weeks after everyone moves from 99.9 to 101.9 is Entravision dumping a cheap VT/Syndicated country format on 99.9.

As Big A said, minus the situation above or a translator putting a cheap format on the air (KAHI Country anyone?), nobody in town really wants it right now. Maybe if 93.7 doesn’t produce you may see another stab at it. Currently, a re-boot of KWOD (with or without Ed Stoltz’s ownership) is probably more likely than a full-market signal switching to country.

I'm surprised at how well KVMX-AM (with the 104.7 translator) does in Sacramento. Yeah, the FM signal is on an interference-free channel, but it's still fairly weak, and I suspect they have virtually zero audience on the AM side. I fully admit that I don't know the formats well, but 99.9 and 890 AM sound similar to me. So I suspect this is an effort by Entravision to steal some of the 104.7 audience with a better signal.

890 AM is a much older skewing station than 99.9

KHHM is Bilingual???

Not technically. Think it’s still running 100% of the music and spots from Hot. Only Spanish I heard yesterday was a bilingual rhythmic tune and a very brief bilingual liner (mentioned earlier). All commercials are in English. So, nothing too different right now.

And yes, 104.7/890 skews significantly older than Tricolor. Best English language comparison: 104.7 is oldies skewing classic hits, Tricolor is an AC that throws more than a few old tunes in the mix. Plus, it seems Tricolor (I’m assuming it’s a network...not just a popular moniker used ) is more personality-driven. Way more chat in the AM drive than 104.7.

I should also point out that 104.7, while running on an interference-free channel, seems to have way stronger of a signal than its 250w at 450’ would have you think. I know we’re not dealing with the folks at La Favorita/KCFA here, but there are several class A stations in town that don’t come in as well 40-50 miles out as 104.7. Things that make you go hmmm...

Update thanks to CBS13 here...

A little late to the party, but they have mentioned the format flips and the jocks who were given notice.

The one thing they did mention was that The Wolf’s social media and whatnot all redirects to Tricolor. Hot 103.5’s is still up but suddenly stopped posting 6/28. I feel that’s telling enough right there instead of shutting it down.

They are now calling themselves the very generic “103-5...Your Hit Music Station”. It does make me wonder if the bilingual Top 40 format will eventually end up there or if this is just an extended stunt. I’m starting to think the former.

Maybe they're going to skew similarly to Hot 105.7 is San Jose, also an Entravision property.

Could some educate me... is Tricolor a locally produced format or are they just taking a feed and inserting local commercials?
