KHLX-Classic 93.1 Switches To All Christmas Music 24/7

Well it turns out that CC's KHLX-93.1 was the first to make the switch to All Christmas Music 24/7 in Sacramento. After years of KGBY-92.5 making that switch every year since 2003, It looks like Clear Channel decided that Classic 93.1 makes the best sense to play continuous christmas music. Now I wonder if CBS will counter with Mix 96.1 with Christmas Music (like they did in the past) or not. Personally one christmas station is enough. So it also looks like that CC beat Salem to the punch. (Salem's 103.9 The Fish was the first christmas station on the air last year)

Good lord, the past 5-10 years of wall-to-wall Xmas music starting before Thanksgiving has permanently burned me out on Xmas music in general. Holiday music is supposed to special, not everyday

This really sucks.Don't get me wrong I like Christmas tunes but would rather see them sprinkled into the format, not replace it.Despite the signal problems I listen to the station all the time. Now I have to look around, especially in the mornings since the Eagle still has no morning music.Let the religious stations have the All Christmas format.

I agree. Why not check out KCCL-92.1 in the mornings? Music is very similar. Plus you have a Live Local DJ at that time period, Joey Mitchell.

And since the station is "Premium Choice", there's a completely different air staff on the station. The listeners the station had before this flip may be asking... Where are my favorite jocks? Are they on six week vacation?

I do but I don't like the way KCCL-92.1 they cut songs off. They are about the worse doing that. Also I have a little beef with Joey Mitchell that goes back to 1981.Let me just say it involved the staff at FM-102,the Budweiser Clydesdales and Joey Mitchell at Placerville Speedway.Let just say he thought it was funny,no one else did.

I'd love to know what I could have done 28 years ago that could still have you upset. I don't remember any of the particulars. The Clydesdales, the Speedway. FM102. What the heck happened that I thought was funny but no one else did?

I worked for KRAK in 1981, not FM102. What was happeneing at the speedway that day. Was I there or just talking about it on the air?

If it still bothers you, I certainly would like to know what I did so that I can apologize.

You are the best Joey! Yes, KCCL may have its flaws but your morning show just makes the station sound very good. Much better than Classic 93.1. Personally I preferred the original KHYL before its switch to Rythmic Oldies back in 1999. Plus I loved the original KCCL when it was on 101.9.

I noticed Mix96 is playing Christmas music this morning. Guess I won't be listening to Saturday at the 70's.

Not a surprise here. Mix 96 has been doing this for a while. In the past, it used to be KGBY-92.5/KYMX-96.1 every year. Now, CC has switched their Christmas Music from KGBY to KHLX.

Trying to put an Alt. on a rimshot stick is a losing propostion in my book. Anyone disagree? My 2 cents.

Clearchannel did it successfully in Atlanta a few years back... they put an active/alternative hybrid on a tiny stick and drove the legendary 99X out of the format. The flipside is their Funky Monkey in Seattle that has never made a dent in KISW... the big difference is the ATL station was fully staffed, whereas in SEA it's just a jukebox.

The only way CC would flip 93.1 to Alternative would be if Alternative was offered as one of their Premium Choice formats that they can run with no local staff, and thus no overhead. I could be wrong but I don't believe that's a format they offer.

I still think the most likely candidate to flip either Alt or Active is one of the CBS stations after Alpha buys that cluster.

do you have it on good info that Alpha WILL in fact buy any of the CBS stations here?

I'm guessing it's just conjecture. Something happens in another market and people jump, "when's it going to happen here?" "When are we going to get AMP?" " When will the Smooth Jazz station flip?" "Alpha buys Portland...Sacramento must be next" Some people on the Bay Area board were speculating about the arrival of a 90's format in SF right after the KWOD flip in May.

Here in LA, people speculate constantly on the NEXT format flip. It's almost like playing "Who's the next dead celebrity?"

The best format for a Rim shot in my opinion is a unique one that has a passionate following. Right now, Sacramento is lacking a alternative rock station. 98 Rock's active rock format, which does feature some alternative music is too oh how do I put it nicely challenged in the area of appealing to a hip midtown crowd.

Does anyone know if 103.9 The Fish changed to All Christmas Music?
