KHVN can stay on another year on 970 thanks to God

Salem is righter than you may know. There is more money in "black church" than Fellowship and Highland Park UMC can shake a Bible at. KHVN's following is loyal to the core, one of the most successful Gospel formats in the country with one of the best morning guys and "newsmen" around.

Yes, I am VERY biased (they're not only former cohorts, they're friends to this day), but I know when something should be kept on-air. This is one of those times. Marketing may be off (remember the HeaVAN, Salem?), but the spirit (pun intended) of that station is greatness.

YES I DO VDV...DROVE IT PLENTY OF TIMES. KHVN IS A HERITAGE STATION, AND IF IT WENT AWAY, THEN LORD KNOWS WHAT WOULD HAPPEN.

Heritage station doesn't ensure survival. The history of Dallas radio is littered with heritage stations utterly destroyed by corporate greed and incompetance. KLIF, KBOX, KZEW, KEGL - all gone. Thank the Lord that WRR hasn't been sold out yet. KLTY went, but came back. I still have an original bumper sticker and the letter they wrote when they went under. I guess you care about the formats that matter to you. Black gospel doesn't mean anything to me, even though I am a Christian. I'm glad its there for the folks that like it, but if it went away tomorrow - I never listened.

If ,when, KHVN goes away, you will have your usual outcry from its listeners and a few noted oportunists to mug before a camera, and make long winded statements. The bottom line ,if you want the station to stay, have its clients pay, or it will go away.

Although the format never made it on the air, the plan for Urban Gospel KJOI 1190 a few years ago would have worked quite nicely had it been given the chance. That facility would have been superb for the programming.

Still surprised that DFW doesn't have Urban Gospel on FM. Here in Houston, "Praise 92.1" has been very well received, and will probably stay around for a while.

D/FW did have one, well before Houston, in the late 1990s. After moving into the market and ending its run as "Fab 105," KTCY 104.9 became gospel "Joy 104.9."

And honestly Bruce, that's why KHVN - and the rest of the potpourri of formats for that matter - are in this market. Everyone feels like that about one station or another. Heck, some people wake up every day to Gene and Julie, and we ALL know how we feel about that. Nonetheless, heritage or not, certain stations are like that for a reason, which is why they last for so long and have such a loyal following. You don't see a lot of postings about Z-Rock, now do you? :D

Again, the reason for the discussion of which format to keep is the greed of the station owner. The original plan was to simulcast the Heaven 97 programming on 970 and 1630 for 5 years, after which 970 would go dark. (eliminating 970 was a high priority for the FCC since there is a 970 in Austin..just 200 miles away..insanely short spaced) By running separate programming (in an attempt to double their revenue) they have created a situation where each frequency has a enough fans to demand that both "stations" should stay on "to serve the public interest." There was a time which such a blatant attempt to circumvent the Commission's rules would result in Mortenson's suitability to hold the license.

Mortenson also inherited a synchronous nighttime transmitter for 1600 in Fort Worth, I think 265 watts. The authorization is apparently still valid, but they seem to be clueless that it exists (or ever did).

Are you talking about what was KRVA? That was sold off to some Indian consortium.
Actually two individuals from KSKY, approached Mortensen about a southern Gospel format after Salem took over KSKY. The proposal was sound. I won't commnet on Mortensen's grediness, except to say,he hardly pays his personnel what they are worth, nor does he give raises.Hell he doesn't even have direct deposit in lieu of paper pay checks. They are overnighted( more money tossed). One thing that helps both stations is the informercials, but it also hinders KKGM's image in order to sell real radio spots. KHVN doesnt want to make waves and cut th screaming preachers off for not paying their bills. Thus there is the nature of the problem, no firm decisive managerial decisions or willingness to retain personnel that could improve the stations in the long run.

Hey Gagorder? How could you know all that about KKGM unless you have worked there. Hey, I work there and even I didn't know. KKGM is a good station. I enjoy working there. It has many loyal listeners. Aside from all the preachers and ballgames that are on, KKGM is the best Southern Gospel station in North Texas. I don't say that just because I work there. I listened to them long before I got a job there.

The other incentive from the FCC when the Dial Expansion Act of 1989 came about was to give owners a 24 HOUR A DAY frequency to trade in their sunup-sundown frequency for, if applicable. Though I would miss something being on 970 in DFW (selfishly, for the sake of a historic frequency, dating back to KWBC in 1946,) it doesn't make much sense to keep a daytimer if you've been given a day/night frequency in return. It's like being given a Buick in an even exchange for your Yugo, but you're allowed to keep your Yugo for years and years after the trade-in.

On the same wavelength, I didn't care for 1150 being dumped for 1160 last year. Lots of rimshots have been displaced the same way, and of course, ABC's reshuffling of 15 stations to make room for KESN to move into Allen from Commerce is a classic case of corporate greed. KESN may never show a profit due to this monkey on their back.

But 970's financial issues are all their own fault. The old KSKY model of yesteryear was to have these folks pay IN ADVANCE, every time, or you didn't get the airtime. That's what made the station profitable with no I.O.U.'s or accounts receivable issues. There are enough legit, solvent churches and preachers out there to keep the airtime full and the station profits flowing.

KRVA was sold off by Mortensen to some Vietnamese consortiu,. Gospel dan, nothing against KKGM,and if you hang with those who know, then you know as well. KKGM has a better survival chance than KHVN, BUT "logic" never seems to be applied in radio since 1996.

No, like Frank said, they're still owned by Mortenson. From the station info for KRVA at the FCC's CDBS: http://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/ws.exe/prod/cdbs/pubacc/prod/sta_det.pl?Facility_id=54730

So now it's a Vietnamese group?

You're right about that, Danny. I see your name on the staff list, and you probably see the name of the person you're talking to here: www.kkgmam.com/final/index2.html

I'm amazed you don't realize how easy it is to recognize a hidden agenda. Seriously, isn't it time for you to quit assuming new identities and to stop pretending?
