"Delta Dawn" mentions Brownsville in the lyrics, but I am not sure if that is Brownsville, Tennessee, or Brownsville, Texas, or maybe a Brownsville in another state.

Or Brownsville, PA or Brownsville, Oregon.

But most probably, Brownsville, Tenn, based upon Tanya's deep southern accent and this bit from Wikipedia (which we always trust as a reliable source. Stated with tongue placed firmly in cheek. ;) ) " The song is about a woman from Brownsville, Tennessee who earned the nickname "Delta Dawn" in her youth for her unmatched beauty and grace. After being dumped by a deceptive suitor, she lost her splendor and became mentally ill, and now spends her days waiting for the return of her lost love."

Helen Reddy also recorded it and without the deep southern accent, so I guess that assumption is out. Then again, there definitely is "Delta" land in the gulf coast area of Texas, but none that I can think of in Tennessee.

There are more interpretations of the meaning of this song, but the only way we will ever know the true meaning is to ask the writers, i.e., Alex Harvey and Larry Collins.
