Kirk Kerkorian, MGM Grand Founder and Movie Magnate, Dies at 98

Kirk Kerkorian, the longtime owner of Metro Goldwyn Mayer and founder of Las Vegas' MGM Grand Hotel, died at age 98 on Monday, June 15, after a "brief illness," according to the Las Vegas Review Journal.

The movie magnate, who led United Artists as well as MGM, is widely credited with shaping the Las Vegas strip and, with the construction of the MGM Grand, creating the concept of the "mega-resort."

Kerkorian was renowned for using his Hollywood pull to bring artists like Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley and Barbra Streisand to perform at his Las Vegas resorts, establishing Vegas as a musical mecca as well as vacation destination.
