It goes without saying that the environment today is very different then it was 6 years ago, when KOMO swooped in and took the Mariners away from KIRO.
6 years ago, the Mariners were coming off a record season....116 wins. Today, they're hoping that they won't have 116 losses! The team is in terrible shape from top to bottom, and I think that fan support is at its lowest level in years.
That being said, the Mariners did help KOMO become the radio station that it is today by driving cume to AM 1000!
KIRO will still be 20 hours of talk everyday and 4 hours of news....doesn't matter if they stay on AM or gravitate to FM. If Bonneville takes one of their frequencies sports, then the impact will be felt by KJR....probably no one else.
My point....no one is doing what KOMO is doing, and in fact, KOMO will have the opportunity to solidify even more their 24/7 news image. I don't know how many times I've wanted news or traffic info, and the damn Mariners game was on.
Bottom line, when all is said and done.....a non issue...especially with a team as pitiful as the Mariners have been.
