KISQ 98.1 KISS FM "THE BAY OLD SKOOL MUSIC"

Okay....they playlist is getting tired and old, could they update their playlist, ever since 2009 when they drop the currents mixed with older music, this radio station plays the same old 70's disco with 80's new wave music. Could they go back to the pre-2009 format or add some 90's and early 2000's music such as...

Monica - Just one of them days, For you I will, Angel of Mine, The First Night
Mase - Feel So Good, What you want, Look at Me
Brian McKnight - Back at One, Anytime
TLC - Waterfalls, Digin in You, Creep, What about your Friends, Baby (3x), Scrubs, Unpretty, Ain't 2 proud to beg
Whitney Houston - My name is not susan, I'm your baby tongiht, I will always love you, I have nothing, My love is your love, Exhale (Shoop, Shoop), Count on Me, Run to You, Heartbreak Hotel, It's not all right, but it's okay.
Janet Jackson - If, That's the way loes goes, Runaway, Love will never do without you, We go deep, Rhythm Nation, Together Again, I get Lonely, Alright, You want this
Salt n Pepper - Shoop, What a Man

Keith Sweat
Michael Jackson (90s)
Mariah Carey

Kiss may be under CC's ownership but they could take some cues from some Radio One-owned R&B stations that went with the "Old School" approach in Dallas, Philadelphia, Cincinnati and St. Louis in the past two years. They can just drop the "Kiss FM" and rename themselves "Old School 98.1."

"Kiss-FM" has been working for 15 years now, and the ratings are strong - that old back and forth with KBLX seems to have ended, with KISQ always on top. Why change branding now? I guess its a bit odd for people who come to the Bay Area from LA and other places where the "Kiss-FM" brand usually means CHR, but that's no big deal.

I was in France last year, and they even have a "Kiss-FM" (said in English).

Well, in my "home markets", London, England and Washington, DC, both Kiss-FMs have had a long-standing connection with the urban format, or CHR Urban as R&R used to call the hits version. And, of course, WRKS (98.7 Kiss) in NYC was a long-time urban leader.

They seem to be scaling back on the New Wave stuff a bit -- maybe because Oldies 103.7 is playing more '80s? I think the mix of soul/disco/funk with danceable white pop works better than I'd've ever imagined, but they have gone a bit too far in stretching the boundaries of what exactly "Old Skool" means. "Don't You want Me" and "Tainted Love" are fine , but I wouldn't play Simple Minds or Tears For Fears if I were them - too white-rock, and better suited for KFOG/K-Fox.

WALR in Atlanta calls itself "Kiss 104" and it has long been one of the top 5 stations there. The only thing stopping it from being a market leader is V-103, although it tied with its competitor last month for 2nd behind WAMJ Majic 107.5.

In Norfolk and Hampton Roads, WUKS "Kiss FM" traded places with WVKL "95.7 RNB" back when it was on a good signal but that ended when CC sent it to a weak signal w/a brief simulcast.

Their old logo was fine. But the ratings are strong so I doubt any major changes are coming. However I wish they would expand their 90's playlist. It's a great radio station.

It's interesting that you guys mentioned KISQ when its not even in the top 5 for its target demographic group, 25-54. Full-service urban contemporary sister station KMEL is #2 on the other hand. I really believe CC wants to push KISQ as far from urban AC or urban oldies format as possible without alienating the urban music listening audience, but really doesn't allow even KMEL to fill that void musically like most full-service urban would... ???

KMEL is technically considered "rhythmic CHR" -- I'm guessing the conventional wisdom is that full-blown current-based urban doesn't work in this market? (Not saying I agree with that, just that it's what the suits think)

Keep in mind KMEL's music direction strongly favors "urban" in spite of billing as "rhythmic". It's in the same position as similiar stations like WPGC DC, KBXX Houston, KBFB DFW and KXHT Memphis, not to mention the now defunct R&R reclassified these stations as "urban" in 2006.

KYLD is a traditional rhythmic, while I'd say KMEL is a heritage urban.

KMEL plays much more r&b, gold hip hop and a little bit of old school from homegrown artists in their playlist then most urban stations do, and they run a quiet storm at night. Urban stations sounded like KMEL a decade ago. (WEDR in my area was an example that sounded that way.)

More declining urban stations should follow KMEL's lead.

KYLD is programmed with San Jose and the large Hispanic population in mind.
