Kiss 108,WBZ-FM and WTKK...two winners and a loser.

I just saw the ratings. Two winners and one big loser. Kiss 108 is a MONSTER, a 10.0 are you kidding me? WBZ-FM is an up and coming superstar.

What's WTKK's excuse? They are now tied with WRKO at a 1.8. WRKO is an AM station with challenges of getting younger listeners to AM, but again..what's WTKK's excuse?

Why someone in the market isn't going after Kiss 108's massive 10.0 share is beyond comprehension. Wouldn't Greater Media be a perfect candidate with it's failing WTKK?

WTKK is due for a format change. KISS and JAMN rule the ratings in this town. Maybe a format between those two? CHR/Urban.

I doubt WTKK will flip... while I think CHR would be a nice choice, they're investing in the talk format with Meehan, etc.

Traditionally, Greater Media doesn't do younger skewing formats, especially not CHR. They just don't have any! If you look at all the Greater Media stations, you see a lot of AC, Soft AC, oldies, classic hits, classic rock, and rock. I'd be surprised if they bucked that trend, I just don't know if Greater Media has the staff, experience, or desire to go after the younger demos.

I highly doubt they have invested much into Meehan. After getting burned by Severin I doubt they would make that mistake again.

There have been attempts to go after heritage Clear Channel CHR's in other markets over the past few years. None of them have been successful. In New York, WXRK has barely made a dent into Z100. Same thing with Amp Radio in Detroit. WKQI is still the big leader there. The Amp in LA has done fairly well, but it hasn't toppled KIIS as of yet. A new CHR has signed on in Tampa to take on heritage outlet WFLZ. We'll have to see how that works out.

Bottom line, between Kiss and Jam'n, they've got the youth market covered. They have the heritage, and between the two stations they can react to anything that comes at them, whether it's an adult skewing CHR that squeezes in between Kiss and Mix, or a more rhythmic signal that goes after 94.5. I don't see how anyone would win with that, and more importantly if anyone could sell it on the street. The only way I could see Greater Media doing it with WTKK is if they went adult CHR like PRO-FM down in Providence. Big pop hits, a few Hot AC titles, no heavy hip-hop. That wouldn't hurt Kiss all that much, and it would be hard to get longtime listeners to Mix, which has it's own heritage, to make the switch. I just don't see it happening.

Not so fast. WDZH (AMP) and WKQI (CHANNEL) have been running fairly close to eachother for several months now. And with the June montlies, AMP has risen ahead of CHANNEL in 6+ numbers. I know that AMP has been winning some dayparts and demos for awhile, CHANNEL's real strong spot had been morning drive. I imagine the same could be held true in Boston with Matty.

WTKK has the worst talk line up I've listened to in a long time. I cannot figue out their love affair with Mell Robbins. Her voice and diction are almost as annoying as the screecher on RKO. I'm hoping that they can get Meehan to do a remote from the space station so that we can study the effects of weightlessness on well you know weightlessness.

TKK still has Eagan and Braude under contract till 2013, maybe Michael Graham too, but contracts (Meehan's might be a minor league one) can sometimes be broken, or maybe they can keep E&B and do a music format but with a morning mostly-talk show.

Then again Howie is available in a little more than a year. They could be waiting for him.

fmradio1 you're spot on regarding CHR in Boston - but I should point out the reverse is true in some markets, where Clear Channel has gone after heritage CHR's and failed - notably in Jacksonville, FL (where they just rebranded the "Kiss" to "Now" after failing against WAPE) Youngstown Ohio, and others. I just looked thinking they failed in Chattanooga, but indeed they beat CHR WDOD there. No denying Clear Channel has very bright, savvy CHR programmers, and have effectively pooled corporate resources to get the most out of these properties.

I don't think Kiss 108 has had a format competitor in over 20 years. WZOU had flipped to urban before Richie Balsbaugh bought it. Before that was WHTT. Was Mix was trying to be CHR for a minute?

Also, just read Matty has re-signed for another 5 years.

encarta95 noted on the Chicago board (discussion about WBBM poss. simulcasting on FM) that when Sports Hub was launched they decided to put it on 98.5 which had perfect coverage in certain areas--the same areas where their competitor was "unlistenable". Could things like that be a factor?

Yet another news-talk FM simulcast: in Chicago, WBBM will be // on 105.9 starting Aug 1 acc to Robert Feder. Would that ever happen here to WBZ, WRKO, or WEEI? (And yes I know about WBZ, WEEI, and even WXKS being on HD-3s or whatever but I'm talking a full fledged FM signal)
