KISS 95.1 "Charlotte's Most Desperate Radio Station"

D

Dirty Diana

Guest
Just heard Drex and Maney doing ANOTHER fake bit with a phone caller. Some girl claiming to be on spring break in Florida. Every bit is some crazy caller who has been poorly coached to make it sound real. Their "War Of The Roses." Just painful to listen to a desperate radio station in 13th place trying to dig out. First, they tried Otis and Brittany. That was a disaster. Now this???

I agree. I hate to see CC win, but Kiss is a trainwreck and me and my teen kids never listen anymore. Same thing with WSOC. Cat Country sounds so much better. They really need to hang up this "New 103.7" nonsense and go back to WSOC. CBS is a trainwreck. Their new "CBS local" website are terrible and their attempt a competing with iHeartradio is pretty terrible too. Just look at the reviews in the Itunes store. Between iHeartradio and Tunein, I can lsiten to all local stations minus CBS. They are kind of shooting themselves in the foot. K104.7 seems better lately though.

Kiss is a terrible CHR and they really need to ditch the pitching. Channel sounds so much better.

CBS is a very well organized company and puts out GREAT stations, outside of Charlotte. I don't know what the problem is in Charlotte. The volatile K-104.7, Kiss 95.1's terrible attempt at CHR, the "new" 103.7, what a disaster.

Thanks for bringing up "The New 103.7" as well. Seems they changed the name out of shear boredom. The station wasn't broke! It didn't need to be fixed. It's okay to tweak the music and change the positioner statement, but it's CRAZY to take the MOST highly identifiable call letters in this market and DUMP it? There's nothing "NEW" about it and it insults the intelligence of the listeners. I know recall isn't as important with PPM, but when you have a solid BRAND NAME like WSOC, why are you ashamed of it? Nice job CBS....guess what you've done?? You've let the name KAT COUNTRY become the most identifiable NAME for country music in Charlotte! Just stupid.

Can't forget to add Old School 105.3 to the list...now they're going after V-101.9. CBS seems to have stations coming at almost every one of theirs these days.

CC runs good CHRs. 105.7 Now in Greensboro is a better station than KZL. Same situation as Charlotte - new CHR sounds fresh, old CHR sounds like it did 10 years ago.

Remember, John Reynolds and the CBS Charlotte crowd are the idiots who let ACE & TJ go. Whether you're a fan of ACE & TJ or not, look at 95's number since they left.

Sad indeed. Who would have ever thought Kiss would ever fall behind: A Gospel station and WFAE!!

Now they're in the fight of their lives to stay ahead of the Contemporary Christian station.
It's time for a change. It should start with the PD. He has totally botched the morning show situation since the departure of Ace & TJ. I'm not saying Ace & TJ are irreplacable, it's just been one hot mess after the other since they left. Reynolds should take the fall.
BTW, Otis is a fine afternoon DJ. However, the attempt to pair him with Brittany was a disaster. We don't care how HOT Brittany may look, this isn't TV. She sounds like a 4 yr old on the radio.

As far as Kiss 95.1, someone really messed up over the years - when I lived there in the early 2000s it was the #1 rated station in Charlotte - and somehow between then and now they managed to lose both Ace and T. J. and their musical positioning to Clear Channel

I'm hoping Maney will try that "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" bit that he did in Sacramento. THAT should turn things around

I don't know...Kiss 95.1's playlist when they were on top is very similar to Channel's playlist today - CBS kept Kiss too far to the Rhythmic side for too long, especially when The Link flipped and there was a hole in the market, leaving an opening for Channel to add more rock - and the Ace And T. J. thing IMO cemented it

Kiss is clearly trying to sound younger. But in their attempt to sound younger that just sound dumber. Make sense?

I don't know what KZL sounds like now, but they had quite an erratic playlist a year or so ago...almost more like a Hot AC/CHR/AC (they played some new stuff not even HAC would play) hybrid. They went pretty far back. I would assume they attract a decent amount of listeners who are too old for most CHR's, or a Hot AC audience. Kiss still plays 90s music, and plays quite a bit of gold.

When was Kiss really that rhythmic? I don't get them that well so I don't really remember, but I normally remember them being pretty adult friendly, definitely before Channel - I remember they were one of the first CHR's I heard play "Haven't Met You Yet" by Michael Buble a few years ago, FWIW...and they're still less rhythmic than CBS's other CHR stations outside of Detroit...

I can't describe how Kiss sounds vs. Channel - just cheap, I guess...Channel sounds very upbeat, bold, big market - Kiss just can't seem to keep up in sound. IMO, if it was that great of a station, they could have weathered the loss of Ace & TJ. Obviously a lot of listeners liked their show more than Kiss overall...

Sorry, I didn't mean that they were hugely rhythmic, just that in the early 2000s they played a lot of rock tracks mixed in 50/50 with the pop/rhythmic ones (literally one rock, then one pop/rhythm, then another rock, etc.), and they were #1 in the market - when 96.1 The Beat signed on, Kiss reacted by moving more to the rhythmic side, but when they flipped to Channel 96.1, and The Link flipped, they stayed there, leaving rock-leaning CHR wide open for Clear Channel, and Kiss has been on a downward trend ever since
