Kiss 95.3 Portsmouth What's up with that?

So what's up with CC simulcasting Boston's Kiss Fm on "95.3 Portsmouth" I'd think another CHR would hurt WEJZ their cash cow. Besides you can hear Boston's Kiss Fm loud and clear in Portsmouth. This is another wasted signal.
Or is this just Cheap Channel not investing in their brand because they might be sold.

I think you answered your own question. No reason to put the Kiss 108 brand on that stick unless the reception up in the 603 is less than pristine. Without having tried to pull in 107.9 up there, I can't think of any other logical reason why CC would do this.

So...................you're telling me that you can hear Kiss from Providence to Portland...and this is a bad thing? Looks to me like Kiss OWNS I-95.

The 95.3 signal is a tough signal. 3/7th's of it goes off to sea.

As for effecting WERZ...meh...as long as listeners are listening to a CC product that's all that matters. Much like Sirus, does it really matter if you are listening to Hair Nation or Margaritaville? Not really, just as long as you're listening to a Sirus product.

As CHRles was kind enough to demonstrate, the signals actually do compliment each other. And, Kiss 108 isn't exactly "loud and clear" in Portsmouth itself. Yes there are some places around the Port City with decent reception of Boston signals - but downtown is not one of them. It faces north toward the river and Kiss 108 doesn't come in well at all. Now it does, thanks to the 95.3 signal.

Basically, CC gets their popular Kiss 108 brand into a fairly affluent area where there are quite a few commuters into the Boston area. As the 95.3 signal has NEVER been successful, there's nothing to lose and a lot to gain here with a simulcast. I know that it's not at all in the spirit of local radio - but none of the alternatives would be either. And, given the small signal, I wouldn't see CC hiring a bunch of live and local jocks to staff it.

Sadly, this is about as good as the CHR format is going to get in this market. And, it is an improvement over the very AC-leaning WERZ. Perhaps there's a little cannabalization, but probably no more than Kiss has in Boston with JAMN. And that monopoly has worked quite well for them. They're probably pulling a page out of that book when it comes to their Portsmouth cluster.

...not to mention, 107.9 definitely loses steam once it reaches the Dover/Rochester and Sanford, ME areas. I think 95.3 can be heard pretty clearly there.

Correct. 107.9 and the rest of the Pru FMs are pretty rough in Sanford, ME. There's no co- or adjacent-channel interference on any of the frequencies (except 106.7), but you're definitely at the fringes of the Class B signal by that point. By contrast, all of the Seacoast signals - even the southerly 102.1 WSAK - come in fine, as do all of the Portland Class Bs and the York County-based Class As.
