KJR-FM and Rivers ..Looks like the PPM's have made a statment, and it's not good

I've spent time in Seattle and listened to Bob Rivers on occasion and I believe like many personalities his history and tenure in the market contributed a great deal to his strong ratings in the diary world. Now he's moved to a new station and it seems that the listeners of KJR-FM don't want an all talk show in the morning, they want their music. Maybe the truth is that all along, these personalities like Rivers never really had as many listeners as they thought they had, in that the diaries were more about brand recall and familiarity , rather than actual listening. The first PPM month is out after the hiring of Rivers , and the listeners have spoken. The whole station dropped considerably. Maybe CC needs to force Rivers to play 8 songs an hour like they do with another high profile CC personality in L.A. Ryan Seacrest. His numbers are huge, and so is his station. All talk morning show on music stations just don't seem to work in PPM.

Maybe you should try coming back in six months or so and offering your opinion rather than basing it on one month of ratings.

Bingo!

I haven't had a chance to look them over completely yet, but I believe what you're addressing is 6+ numbers. It's the target demo M25-54 in at least a four month average that counts.

There are some shows that can make little to no music work. Kidd Kraddick comes to mind. Dave, Shelley & Chainsaw at JACK-SD. And quite a few shows that can play 3-4 songs an hour and still bring in the numbers. Maybe they need to look at the 3-4 songs method and then strip back as needed.

Rivers finished #3rd in Men 25-54 with BJ Shea in solid number one. KJR Mornings is up due to Rivers, but the rest of the station tanked. Mid-days went from 1st to 15th. Afternoons had the same problem. The Oldies format with female lean and a male leaning morning show appear to be a disconnect. The net effect is a huge ratings slide overall for KJR-FM.

Look's like Rivers was #3 25-54 adults in month one. Beat only by BJ and NPR, two other mostly talk morning shows. Why would anyone tell a show that is always in the top of the money demo to play eight songs an hour ?

I agree 100%. Rivers debuts third in the market in his first month back. Nothing wrong with that. KJR just needs to adjust to a male format to retain some of that audience. Rivers and KZOK were the perfect match and KJR may need to adjust to survive. A station can't live on just big morning numbers

The most important ingredient is long-term programming consistency. The morning show drives the bus, but the tires must be all balanced. Radios still have dials or switches on them and it takes little effort to flip stations.

Very good examples with lots of proven success! Another good example of a successful mass appeal talker is the MJ Morning Show out of FLZ in Tampa. When the PPM's came out the CC uppers freaked and forced him to shorten his segments and play more music and his numbers actually came down as a result! Now they have him sprinkle a few extra songs in the 6a and 9a hours but leave the 7 and 8a hours for longer talk segments and the numbers are better again. Bottom line...the listeners didnt want their favorite show mutilated by the same played out songs! Bill W hit the nail on the head...in the long run its all about consistency. I think Bob will be fine!

Rivers now at #2 and climbing. Looks like butlin is right. Looks like the guy who was pretty quick to start this thread might be wrong. Isn't that a guy who used to work at KJR ? Sorry...I'm just bored and trying to stir up a little trouble on this quiet board. :)

Comments like that are nothing new here. Most who site 6+ numbers anyway, completeley ignor target demos. Some had dire predictions regarding KIROs move to FM. Nor will you see much crow on the menu when the predictions fell way off.
