KJWP - Wilmington's channel 2 [ME-TV] now has a Delaware news magazine

I noticed that on Saturday night at 7pm, KJWP, Wilmington's channel 2 [ME TV affiliate] now airs a half hour The Delaware Way program, hosted by Larry Mendte. This past week's show had an interview with the head of Del DOT and Delaware's infrastructure [bridges, etc]. At 7:30pm Mendte hosts a second show called, And Another Thing, that focuses on some larger national topic. It appeared that KJWP aired make good spots [that probably aired during Batman which is preempted for this hour of home grown programming].

KJWP-TV has at least met WHYY-TV channel 12's amount of local Delaware programming. So now there is First on Channel 12 and The Delaware Way on Channel 2. So I guess the question left is when will Channel 61 WPPX Wilmington [channel 14 on cable], ION TV affiliate get it in gear and air a Delaware news/public affairs program?

I don't see how this channel is worth two identical posts on two different boards, plus an almost identical post on the New York board.

Here is a Wyoming TV station, owned by some guys in New Hampshire with no connection to this area, that used an obsolete loop-hole to get into the Philly TV market. Then they stole ME-TV from channel 69.

Then they start preempting the ME-TV schedule. From five to eight every morning they run infomercials instead of...

Then they black-out Batman for two chat segments with Scary Larry Mendte, a disgraced broadcaster who belongs in jail. I saw a bit of one show and it was Larry and his wife Dawn Stensland giggling with some guest. The only news here was that (1) She is still talking to Larry and (2) She has really aged and gained weight, which explains her absence from local TV otherwise.

This is the most useless piece of television I've seen in a long time. It used to be you had to get up early on Sunday morning to see this kind of meaningless chatter, usually before the in-studio mass. Nobody but watched it but somehow the FCC insisted on it. I bet even MikeFromDelaware won't watch it. He admitted he didn't watch channel 12's former evening newscast, after complaining about it being dropped. He probably wouldn't watch one on channel 61 either.

I hope ME-TV pulls the affiliation from these carpet-baggers and gives it back to channel 69. Then I hope the FCC finally shuts down all television on the VHF band as they had planned to do (and didn't have the cajones to do). If the FCC wants to do something useful, they should give lo-VHF to FM and shut down AM radio (before it dies on its own).

Apparently, MikefromDelaware hasn't noticed that channel 61 DOES have a public affairs talking heads snooze-fest called "Window on Wilmington." Don't feel bad. Nobody else has noticed either but it placates the FCC and makes a few do-gooders and activists feel like big-shots because they get to be on television - even if nobody watches.

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is well rid of the appropriate named lower counties. A few more decades of global warming and Delmarva will be mostly underwater and we won't have to listen to all the whining about how nobody pays attention to Delaware.

PS: This is a radio board. But the topic is about shows on TV stations. Hint: If it has pictures, it's TV - not radio.

Fred, as Wilmington has so little actual radio stuff to discuss, what did it hurt to post it here. Apparently the moderators didn't have a problem either time I posted here on KJWP. I posted on the PHilly TV board, because yes that's where it belonged and realized many of those readers wouldn't bother with Wilmington Radio link. I only posted something about KJWP on the NYC TV board, because someone there had mentioned it. So I was given them the rest of the story.

Thanks for the head's up on WPPX. I haven't watched ION much and didn't know they finally did start a local program. I didn't watch the second show with Mendte. I don't believe either will win any awards for TV journalism, but it is what it is. I realize you don't have much interest in the First State and would enjoy seeing global warming eliminate it so that those in Media could have ocean front property, but there are some here who do have such an interest so those public affairs shows might be of use for those folks. So don't watch those shows if you don't find them to your taste.

It's not my level of interest in the so-called "First State" (a highly debatable and questionable historical claim), it's these on the cheap, worst possible time period public affairs shows in any location and on any topic. The FCC pushes for "public affairs" programming and stations put this crap on the air - without expending any effort or money in the process. It is such blatant hypocrisy. I doubt you can find one person (including yourself) who actually makes a point to watch any of these shows (unless they are related to this week's guest). A blank stage with two or three chairs and two or three earnest people. It's bad - useless TV. I don't see why you or anyone would watch or encourage it. The WHYY Friday night show is actually not bad but the other two are dreck.

I'm surprised to see you say Wilmington radio has so little to discuss. Apparently, your view of the local radio scene has changed somewhat. The decline and fall of Wilmington radio might be worth a thread on its own.

High-end media types already have oceanfront property. Seems like the network stars and honchos all go to Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket.

I've lived and worked in a lot of places, but I've never seen any place as self-absorbed as Delaware. I also can't think of any other place in which government exists to serve mostly outside business interests. And so does the local media.

I agree with Avid Listener. This thread is about the LOCAL Wilmington programming that KJWP produces, not ME-TV's national lineup. So this should be in Philly TV not National as Wilmington is part of the Philly TV market. So the Moderators might want to move this one more time. Sorry I caused so much confusion and hassle. This site is not as user friendly as the old version.

The Delaware Radio site gets far fewer posts than it used to get. Many of the former folks don't seem to post here now. My interest in Wilmington radio hasn't faded, but there are far fewer things to discuss given the lack of posts. Also with Arbitron only showing ratings for member stations, the Wilmington ratings are pretty much meaningless. IF we had PPM like Philly and all stations were shown, then that would provide more fodder for discussion. So WJBR or WSTW are #1 or 2 respectively with WXCY and WDSD are in 3rd or 4th respectively followed by WDEL, and WILM. What's to discuss. No non-comms, no Philly stations.

Much of what's on TV these days is dreck, so why shouldn't the public affairs stuff be the same, the point was they are doing something for the local area. Sure they picked a time on Saturday evening and again on Sunday morning when viewing is low. They realize neither Mendt show will pull in big numbers so why air it during a prime time slot. WHYY-TV does the same thing with First and my guess is WPPX also does this. It must cost KJWP some money as they had to hire Larry Mendt and whomever else is involved in producing, editing, writing, cameras, sound, etc, to make the show happen. Maybe KJWP's sister station in NJ already has a studio with crew and maybe Mendt is already being paid by a salary by them and this is just something they've added to the work those folks do in NJ. Or KJWP pays peanuts to the NJ sister station for the extra work, making these shows very cheap to produce, who knows.

TV posts have always been considered OK as long as it's in the appropriate forum. For instance, the WISH-TV Indianapolis getting it's affiliation yanked was in the radio section of Indiana
 
Which is the chicken and which is the egg? There's nothing to discuss because people aren't posting. Or people aren't posting because there's nothing to discuss. I notice you don't frequent this board as much as you used to.

If Wilmington were included in the Philadelphia market, as it should be, then Wilmington would have PPM (although non-subscribing stations would still not be included in the published topline numbers). The Census Bureau includes Wilmington in the Philly Metro Area and has for 30 years because people in NCC use Philly media, commute to and from PA for work and for shopping. In this regard, NCC is no different than Chester or Delaware counties. But you choose to link yourselves to those rednecks below the canal.

For all practical purposes, both Wilmington right-wing talk stations are dead. WJBR and WSTW target and program for the Philly market. As for those two stations playing hillbilly music: One is in Havre de Grace, Maryland and the other is just outside Dover. Basically, there is no Wilmington radio. If they still included non-subscribing stations, everyone could see that in Wilmington, nearly everybody listens to Philadelphia radio (if they listen to radio at all).

Meanwhile, there is something happening in what's left of local radio in Wilmington. The disappearance of a female morning news reader from "one Wilmington station." I'm surprised you haven't added to that thread to enlighten us on what happened.
 
I have no knowledge of why that station's best sounding female news anchor/reporter is no longer there. All I know is she's not there. I'm sure with her great professional sounding voice and her skills as a reporter, she'll find employment quickly, probably in a larger market. Wilmington's loss, in my opinion.

Regrettably, not likely in today's job market. She came to Wilmington the first time after losing her jobs at KYW and then WWDB. She moved to WBAL in Baltimore, lost her job there and came back to Wilmington. Apparently, the geniuses running radio - who embrace right-wing talk and affirmative action in hiring - don't want a woman with ability, a strong work ethic, who doesn't ask for (or need) special preferences. It seems like they want to hire those airheads, with whinny, nasal, teeny-bopper voices, who are always asking male co-workers for "help" (while those co-workers have work of their own) and going in to use their "wiles" on the boss to get their way ("wiles" ranging from flirting with to sleeping with). Mellany is the rare exception. But why did you answer the question here instead of in the Wilmington radio thread?

To bring this back to the original topic: Yes, my comments above apply to Dawn and Alycia. Plus the kind of bimbos Fatso so often hired (and then complained about behind their backs).

In any case, Saturday Night with Scary Larry is on again tonight (right after "The Adventures of Superman"). I will look forward to reading your review of the show.

On the plus side: As long as Scary Larry is in town, Fatso is no longer the most despised broadcaster in Delaware.
