KLIV/1590 Switching To NBC Radio News

With the shuttering of the CNN Radio News feed at the end of March, San Jose's KLIV (1590 AM) will switch to the new NBC Radio News network beginning on April 1.

KLIV News Director George Sampson posted the following:

We're getting a Peacock! An exciting change is coming to KLIV. Beginning April 1st (no fooling!) KLIV will become an affiliate of NBC News. Our twice-hourly network newscasts will feature some of the best known reporters and news anchors in broadcasting, with the resources of America's #1 news team. KLIV will, of course, continue to be your source for Silicon Valley and San Jose News, weather and the best traffic reports in the Bay Area!

Unless NBC News Radio is expanding into 24/7, this will hardly be enough to fill KLIV's schedule. NBC News Radio currently offers only 1-minute newscasts 3am to 7pm daily. But given George's post it appears that KLIV will have a lot of local newswheel to fill. It can be done, but it's a hard trick to keep it from becoming boring.

1590 could play the 1010 WINS card but the problem here is that the 1010 WINS Method of doing all news will not work in San Jose or San Francisco.

Check out this Louisville Kentucky Radio Museum link. This profile has an aircheck of the last time NBC ran the NIS all-news operation on radio in Kentucky WNNS were the call letters for the NBC NIS operation in 1977. Its interesting that Local News was on Top-Of the Hour while National and International news dominated the rest of the hour. Who were the Local Hosts for KNAI 99.7 FM when NBC ran NIS here in SFO?

I read the NY Times article and and it says that Dial Global will remove the CNN Radio News (Top of the Hour updates). So this means that 960 KNEW would have to have an NBC affiliation by April 1st.
and this means that KSTE 650 in Sacramento would have to decide which radio Network to sign contracts with either CBS, NBC, or Cumulus ABC Radio.

Would you believe one was Don Chamberlain, post-California Girls?

Well, actually, Cumulus or Dial Global, which runs both the CBS and NBC newscasts.

I went to the Dial Global website and I saw that it owns the NBC, CBS, and CNN radio brand. I know CC owns a certain percentage of the Fox Sports radio and Fox News radio brand.

Yes, indeed, formerly the Westwood One network. Back when the founder, Norman Pattiz ran Westwood One, he started with Dr Demento and used that money to buy the Mutual radio network. Then he acquired the distribution rights to just about everything else in radio (CBS, CNN, NBC, United networks, etc) until he had nearly everything but ABC. I'm not sure when it happened but it all got gobbled up by Dial Global.

I always wondered why KYW 1060 AM and WNEW-FM in DC has to put a disclosure saying "This is a CBS Station" during the hourly ID's. I noticed KYW would run both ABC News in its clips and some CBS News in its clips. I had no idea that CBS Radio Inc has to ask Dial Global for a contract to run CBS hourly News.

KYW isn't required to disclose they are a CBS station - it's their choice to do so. This kind of thing isn't unusual. For example, News Corp (Fox) used to own a number of TV stations affiliated with other networks - KSBW-8 in Monterey, for example; an NBC affiliate. The production divisions of the networks typically produce shows that run on other networks - a Fox produced show might run on CBS or vice-versa.

If there was ever any hesitation among media corporations to share resources for mutual profit, it's long gone.

KBCW is a good Example of CBS owning a CW station with a CBS O&O KPIX. I never heard of KLLC or Live 105 saying "This station is Owned by CBS". Or KNX saying "This station is Owned By CBS". I know KLLC and live 105 would send their host to do a scene for Eye on the Bay on CW and KPIX5 as cross promotion and in the case of KNX and KCBS 740/ 106.9 its Go to CBSYourcity.com for more info. I know KGO on some of the Hourly ID's with KFOG will say "this Station is owned by Cumulus" and KOIT say "An Entercom Station" on Hourly IDs. and also the CC's Stations will say "An Iheartradio Station". I guess Iheartradio is supposed to be a brand for its radio division of CC. Just Like Xfinity is a brand for Comcast in the San Francisco Bay Area for Cable and Internet.

Clear Channel stations used to mention their ownership, as in "KISQ, San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose - A Clear Channel Corporation Station..." then they figured out they shouldn't be bragging about that and stopped.

The corporate identity is probably a positive for an All News station - otherwise, it's not. If anything, people who listen to Alice or Live 105 would consider it a negative.

Correction in 1999 KCBS 740 did disclose itself by saying "an Infinity Station" right when the CBS Hourly News came. I thought Infinity Broadcasting only did oldies like KRTH 101 and KFRC 610/99.7 around this time. I had no idea that CBS merged with Infinity at that point. I heard of CBS Viacom Merger around this time when CBS got KBHK 44 to be the flagship UPN station on the West coast at that point.

It was a very weird merger/spinoff that I still don't fully understand. As far as I can tell, the programming went to Westwood One, the station ownership stayed with CBS and the management went to Infinity. I think this was only so that Mel could run the CBS stations without stepping on other people's toes. Infinity began as KOME in San Jose, by the way. The funny thing about this arrangement is that although the companies were separate, they appeared to own each other. As I understand it, Infinity owned a chunk of CBS and CBS owned a chunk of Westwood One, even though WOne was publicly traded. And CBS apparently owned most of Infinity, making it sort of a cat chasing its tail situation.

Today, Infinity and CBS are one, and was spun off from Viacom (which itself is weird because Viacom was originally a spinoff of pre-Westinghouse CBS, and then Viacom eventually bought post-Westinghouse CBS. But Sumner Redstone didn't feel that Viacom was living up to its potential, so the company was split back into CBS and Viacom, but along slightly different lines than before.

Westwood One's program distribution network was sold to Dial Global, but I'm not sure if this means that they control content or not.

Simple deal. CBS bought infinity in June of 1966 for $4.9 billion, which included $1 billion in debt assumption. Infinity's 44 stations became part of CBS. And then they ran for about 4 years as Infinity, until Viacom split off into two parts, with the CBS name returning in 2000.

Often confusing is that the licenses often are kept in the same names... KRTH might have been "Infinity of Los Angeles, Inc." and since CBS had bought all the shares in Infinity, they owned "Infinity of Los Angeles, Inc."

We still see a lot of CC stations in names like Jacor and Citicasters, etc.

I know the Licenses for the CC stations in San Francisco and Sacramento are still labeled as AM/FM Inc. Some are even labeled as Chancellor inc in some cases.
