KLSD PLANS TO BUILD 6 TOWERS AND RAISE POWER TO 50,000 WATTS

KLSD to use KSDO's six towers and go 50kw

KLSD is planning to use the present towers of 1130 KSDO. The transmitter site was not included in the sale of the now-Espanol-religious station.

The CP is still a year away.

Well yes, the 1130 frequency.
What I am saying is, why can't Clear Channel make a deal to get the K-S-D-O call letters, does Hi-Favor really need them? Seems like they are not identifiable to the hispanic community. Am I wrong about this?

The station is Spanish-language, David. The posters are confusing call letters and the language/format.

Radio Nueva Vida has a sizable Latino listening audience in North County San Diego (at least in days).
 
Re KSDJ, I happened on a garage sale about 12 years ago being run by the heirs of a fellow who had been an engineer for KSDJ, I bought a couple of the huge records used for transcribed shows back in that day and got them home and lo, no turntable huge enough to play them. The heirs said the fellow had been responsible for setting up the KCBQ transmitter at Santee almost 50 years ago. The labels say KSDJ 5,000 watts day, 500 watts night, I guess that would have been from their site about near SDSU. KSDO used to run 5 & 1 from a site near Westgate Park, where Fashion Valley is now, with buffalo roaming around the site.
 
Total newb questions ahead:

Why would KLSD need 6 towers for it to broadcast from? If they are all in the same general area anyway what advantage does this type of setup offer over a single tower instead?

Lopaka: You have historic recordings which are extremely rare. KSDJ was of course the precursor to KCBQ. At the time the studios were at 5th & Ash. KSDJ was owned by the San Diego Journal newspaper. You need a 16 inch turntable to play the ET's. SOmeone should be able to put you in touch with an public or private organization which could dub those transcriptions. I'm sure we would all love to hear the content.

Tha radiation pattern is directional, meaning more radiation in a certain direction or directions as opposed to omnidirectional or circular in its radiation pattern. This can only be controlled using multiple towers. KLSD may not need the use of all six of those towers, but that's what's out there already in place. KOGO is directional with two towers, KFMB uses three. It all depends on what you're trying to achieve in terms of pattern control.
 
Wow, I had no idea these recordings were rare. Thanks very much for the info. It all goes to show how fast not just the radio business, but how fast the whole world changes...I guess it also goes to show that stopping by garage sales sometimes brings interesting results. The fellow also had a small but magnificent collection of old T-Birds that took my breath away. Anyway, have a nice weekend and stay cool.
