KMVP & KFNX: Competing teams' sports networks both available in the same market

Last Sunday, I noticed that the ASU / UA basketball game was being heard on both KMVP (860 AM) and KFNX (1100 AM). KMVP had ASU'snetwork, while KFNX offered UA's network. KFNX's coverage appeared to be a straight simulcast of KCUB (1290 AM) in Tucson, including commercials for Tucson's local businesses.

How common is it for two competing teams, from different markets, to have both of their respective networks carried by two different stations in the same market?

I'm not talking about situations when it's a huge market and there are multiple teams worthy of their own sports networks. For example, in L.A., I believe that KLAC (570 AM) carries UCLA while KSPN (710 AM) has USC. But, both of those stations serve the same market. And I'm not referring to, for example, being in Milwaukee during a Brewers/Cubs game, and being able to receive the Brewers' coverage on WTMJ (620 AM) and the Cubs' coverage on WGN-AM (720) due to the strength of WGN's signal.

In Indiana, if a community is large enough to have two radio stations, one is probably carrying Indiana University sports and the other is carrying Purdue.

I'd guess that it's extremely common. In a state with more than one major university, each school's radio network probably is heard throughout the entire state.

Yeah, that's very common. Any given Saturday during football season, I can get an Aggie game and a Longhorn game in addition to the two (smaller) local schools (Univ. of Houston & Rice). A&M & UT will play each other every year in a rivalry game; UH & Rice will play the Longhorns or Aggies when they want an out of conference payday. A&M games move around due to scheduling conflicts (usually MLB-inflicted) so you have to hunt between the Clear Channel AM & FM stations to find who has the game each week; the others stay put.

Plus, since high school football is a religion in Texas, let's not forget the legendary small market Shine All Nine (KSHN/Liberty) who will run one high school in the left channel and another school in the right channel all season long. I'm not sure if they do one broadcast for a rivalry game or if they keep the split mono thing going when they play each other but they've been doing it for years. (They probably keep the split channel thing going so they can sell 2 x the commercials.)
