KNPT Newport, 1310 AM to go off the air -- and other stations in its cluster apparently

I saw on another radio forum I go to that KNPT is going off the air January 1st.

When I next tuned in, they had local spots, and were still obviously on the air, but there were at least one or two announcements per hour of the station's demise, and the announcement said that the other stations in the cluster were going off the air, too. Apparently their bank wouldn't continue the loan for their studio -- something like that. 75 years on the air and they're apparently not making enough money. The announcement says their advertising revenues have dropped more than 50% post pandemic.

Sad, really. They stream, and they have a translator, but it's not saving them.

It's a little more complicated than that. The owners defaulted on their loans and the bank foreclosed on them along with two departments of the state of Oregon over money owed.

Understood. But not many businesses can survive a 50% drop in revenues over a two or three year period. That part of it isn't really all that complicated.

Certainly, whenever the loans were made, the 50% drop in advertising revenues wasn't anticipated.

There is a Kiwi-SDR in Newport that reads all YBC AMs are still on the air: 820, 1310, 1400. This is as of 10:20AM PST. A reporr posted on another board (pdxradio.com) indicates KNCU (branded "KYTE" ) will have special programming on New Year's Eve before the closedown.

At this point only KNPT and KWDP still stream on the Internet. KWDP and KBCH seem to be the same audio..

Here's the news story from the Yachats paper...

All five remaining YBC stations are simulcasting today: KNCU,KCRF, KWDP, KBCH, and KNPT. During the morning news block it seems like they were running the combo IDs every five minutes . I heard KNPT last night, with their regular programming, competing with KLIX for the same channel (1310).

If they're on the air today, because of the football game, my guess is they yank the plug before midnight, as they did say they're leaving the air on January 1st.

KNPT, as we all know by now, is off the air. Didn't hear them the night / a.m. of Jan 2nd. Just heard KLIX Twin Falls / KEIN Great Falls.
