KPFA's morning staff axed; heated debate live on-air right now

So tell me, what would we lose if KPFA was sold or went dark, I could see it being KGO-FM maybe

From their cold dead hands...and even then, they would never ever ever sell to a corporation.

There are lots of rich lefties in Marin who'd be glad to bail out the station if it needed cash.

The only way Pacifica ever lets go of KPFA or WBAI New York is if Pacifica ceases to exist. Those are their only two stations located between 92 and 108 FM. No amount of cash will ever separate Pacifica from those two valuable FM properties. :)

I'm frequently reminded that people with left-wing viewpoints, if left to their own devices, will predictably form a circular firing squad.

It's true of all extreme-views groups (witness the CA Republican-party primary process). They need a common foe or they turn on one another.

But KPFA is a peculiar case; they overspent their budget repeatedly and then when PF management had to step in, the locals unite against the national. Well, maybe they should have a taste of what commercial radio would do - fire everybody but one very part-time engineer and run 100% off the bird.

That exactly right. I often read about how tyranical the big radio companies are with employees, as if that's a thing unique to big radio companies. It happens everywhere.

"I read somewhere (maybe here) that King Broadcasting wanted to buy 94.1 and offered to pay cash PLUS give Pacifica 93.3 to move KPFA, back in the 1980's. I don't know if this is true or not."

According to what I was told by the GM at KPFK at the time, it's true. Pacifica was offered an annuity sufficient to support KPFA in perpetuity without all that fund raising. The Foundation board turned it down, fearing there would be hidden strings attached. This despite assurances to the contrary from King.

I suspect that offer would be looked at differently today.
