KPHN AM HD and WOAI AM (and WHAM AM)

I got a Sony XDR-S3HD yesterday at Best Buy ($50 closeout).

I live on the Missouri side of the Kansas City area.

KPHN AM 1190 leaves their HD signal on at night.

During the day, the Sony always switches to the HD
signal on KPHN.

At night, the Sony continually switches between AM
and HD on KPHN.

I'm wondering if WOAI AM 1200 is interfering with the
upper sideband of the KPHN HD signal at night. Prior
to KPHN starting HD, WOAI was easily receivable here.

I sometimes receive WHAM AM 1180 here, but I doubt if
the signal is strong enough to interfere with KPHN HD.

Skywave is unpredictable at night, does all sorts of things to radio waves. Fades could turn the IBOC off and on, also try an analog radio and tune it to KPHN at night and see if you get a hash noise over the station off an on, if you do it, WAOI interfering, try this more than one night by the way. IBOC hash goes a LONG way, much father than you'll receive iBOC. I get IBOC here in MA From 1000 miles away on an analog radio. I live 40 miles from WBZ and I get WOR and WFAN's IBOC hash louder here in MA from those two NY stations than I do from WBZ most nights. This is one of the reasons IBOC is such a lousy idea especially at night, it's very unpredictable just as night time AM radio itself is..

Absolutely. At night, WOAI interferes with KFXR 1190 Dallas inside its protected contours. Their upper sideband is easily audible during the day. The IBOC sidebands appear to be much more robust than the analog signal.

Using the AM antenna that came with the Sony:

Day:
1180 3 signal bars (lower IBOC)
1190 3 signal bars
1200 3 signal bars (upper IBOC)

Night:
1180 2 signal bars
1190 3 signal bars
1200 1 or 2 signal bars (WOIA 1200 AM
is audible in the background, sometimes
the Sony will switch to HD even though
I can still hear WOAI faintly)

My situation seems to be the reverse of the
typical AM IBOC problem, a distant AM station
is interfering with a local AM IBOC sideband.

Do you REALLY-believe that AM-IBOC can change the color of the AM carpet, Lino? HA!!! I’m scratching my scalp-off – LOL! Why-not consider a return to technical excellence and compelling programming before you propose the “DeathStar” for AM – hehe :
