KPKX 98.7 The Peak and Other Great Adult Contemporary Hits & Classics

I have my fascination with the top 40 and rhythmic sound, especially these days due to the latest trends in rhythmic pop and other certain reasons, but sometimes when I get burned out on hit music, I like to turn to KPKX because of the large variety of good music they have. I believe this is one of the best ran adult stations here in Phoenix. Loving the large playlist, no repeating a song in a day, and playing some of the good classics with meaningful lyrics that has become harder to find these days. One thing I have noticed is that in many ways, older, classic, or oldies hit songs seem to be more meaningful, thought out, and powerful than many hits of today. Listening to KOOL 94.5, KEZ 99.9, some classic rock and other things is also a good escape from today because the music is just so..... different. I'm not saying that today's music has no quality, but the oldies and alternative seem to have that true quality and a few things that are lacking today. Just listen to the words, the melodic arrangements...etc.

Anyway, I'd say The Peak is definitely one of the best things that has happened in the Valley. Mix 96.9 is ok, but one thing I'd TRULY love is if Mix 96.9 KMXP would evolve to be more like KBIG in L.A. As of right now, I'd consider 96.9 to be an adult alternative station by sound, more than anything else. Good alternative hits, but more variety of hot adult contemporary hits would be great at Mix 96.9 fm.

KPKX is sounding awesome and we are very fortunate to have them in the Valley today. I can't speak for everyone else, but personally, I love it. These are my views on classic hits.

Totally agreed on the Peak. Stations with interesting playlists tend to appeal more to the radio messageboard crowd instead of average listeners, but the Peak is an exception - it was ranked #2 for A18-49 and A25-54 in the recently released Spring book.

The only station ahead of it in the ratings race is Mix - and with that in mind, it's hard to imagine that any changes will be made there.
 
I think one reason the older songs sound more meaningful is that they have stood the test of time. Stations like KOOL, KEZ and so forth are (with the possible exception of a "guilty pleasure" song once in a while) not going to play weak songs from 20-30 years ago. Listeners won't agree on all the song choices, but most of the dogs will be long gone. New music, being new, will have to find an audience and that process is hit or miss. That means some songs that "hit" today may fit today's cultural vibe, but they won't last very long; just a few will.
 
Agree that The Peak is a great station! Kudos to them for being brave an occasionally doing The Best of Everything 80s Weekend from time to time! Still waiting for Irene Cara to air, though...

Thanks KDM for mentioning this station. I hadn't known about it... JACK-FM in L.A. is OK, but 98.7 The Peak should be the template for all "Adult Hits" stations!!

I've been listening for a few hours today and I am really impressed with their variety. Their motto is: "The Best of Everything"
I can attest to that as I noticed after reviewing the playlist of today they have played the following list of songs which were my personal favorites for the respective years... all played today (since midnight):

When Doves Cry-Prince [1984]
All I Wanna Do-Sheryl Crow [1994]
Counting Blue Cars-Dishwalla [1996]
The Way-Fastball [1998]
Learning to Fly-Foo Fighters [1999]
Drops of Jupiter- Train [2001]
Viva La Vida-Coldplay [2008]

That's seven in all and the day's not done!
Besides those, there's a handful of songs which also would have been in my Top 5 for the year and/or songs which made #1 on some station's list for the Year (example Plush-STP KROQ's #1 song 1995 I believe)

Why are they listed as "Classic Hits" on the Arbitron PPM list???

BTW that's two stations that I really like called "The Peak" WXPK White Plains NY 107.1 The Peak (AAA) and this one 98.7 The Peak.
 
The Peak is one of my favorite music stations when I'm in the mood for something different (usually about the time that Mac and Cheese come on the air at KT'R). ;D

There are too many to name, but some of what I like is Nickelback, P!NK, Peter Gabriel, Rihanna, the Macy Gray that's playing now, Tal Bachman, New Order, T.L.C, Rob Thomas, Linkin Park, Outkast, Alanis Morissette....

And some of these aren't even my top favorite picks, just what comes off the top of my head right now.

Good station. They probably wouldn't play "come on & ride it (the train)" by Quad City DJ's or most hot Jazz or Country classics, but they sure do play a lot..... close to truly being "the best of everything"!
 
They just continue to pump all the great stuff.
I remember I used to love K-Lite, then when they first switched I wasn't too fond of The Peak, but as time went by, it once again began to sound the best. I don't know what it is about 98.7 that makes it sound better because if you listen, KEZ does have decent material and on-air's, too. I guess maybe it's the variety and music programming.
 
I also think there is some kind of vibe or something even when you listen to their air talent. I really like the station and only thing I would suggest is to have some more speciality shows. Would be cool to hear some classic american top forty with casey kasem or have some shows spotlighting different eras in music like disco, grunge, etc.
 
I believe Casey is on Mix 96.9, and I think he sounds very appropriate there. However, it would be EXTREMELY interesting if The Peak did have a mix show, where they mixed things such as

I read something recently about Casey retiring...not sure if it's already happened, or if it's happening soon.

But hearing classic shows on KMXP, KPKX, or elsewhere would be a treat!
 
Well yes casey is retired now and they do syndicate classic shows from the 70's and 80's. It be great if the peak picked these up and put them on sometime over the weekend. Cool to hear the actual shows from years past.

Sounding good, despite the fact it's leaning heavily on the alternative side and leaving many other things out. I'm familiar with this sound because I grew up with it, listening to an adult chr station in Atlanta throughout most of the 90's and tuning in The Zone a few times here in Phoenix in the late 90's.

Kool FM is doing all 70's it seems..... which will be the next station I talk about, so get ready..
