KPNW played “Bad Habits” by Ed Sheeran.

I could see 92.5 taking on a bit more of a rhythmic lean, but I suspect if they do that it won't be all that noticeable. I would say that 98.9 is still trying to find its lane and will continue to tweak for several months. Expect to hear more stuff on 98.9 they likely would not have played at launch.
They don’t play Katy Perry and Maroon 5 but they do play Harry Styles and Ed Sheeran sometimes on 98.9. Maroon 5 and Katy Perry play on KQMV and KRWM though. KQMV had a rhythmic lean when Click was in the market especially during its first years of it’s CHR format (as it was heavy on Rhythmic titles from Hip Hop, Rhyhtmic Pop and Dance titles) to avoid overlapping with that station as well as position it’s playlist in between Kiss and KUBE. Back then they would avoid any Mainstream Pop/Rock titles even before Click first aired indicating they may have been planning to flip 98.9 to Modern AC as far back as the CHR format started.

If one song sets you off, then radio is not for you.

It doesn't matter if the song is Bad Habits or We Belong. If one song causes you to crap the bed, then subscribe to something safe that you can control. Because that's not what radio is.
No defactin’ in the ol’ fartsack here. Just saying the song sucked and something else could’ve been played instead. How about Thunder Clatter by Wild Cub? That’s AAAish right? They leave out a whole bunch of artists and songs that usually get played on AAAs.

Let me say this again: If ONE song causes you to crap the bed, then don't listen at all. They are not your personal music service. They don't work for you. They play a bunch of songs that all together appeal to a mixed group of people. You're obviously not one of them. So throw the radio away and stream your own personal playlist from Spotify. Problem solved. You need to learn something that people today find hard to understand, and that's tolerance. You're not going to like every song.

Very possibly the local programmer does not feel the songs belong or the local research shows that the target listeners don't want to hear those songs.

I know, kind of a stretch, isn't it? Oh, and there's this little thing regarding obscenity rules that make a station going to rhythmic CHR problematic.
They seemed to keep the same playlist formula for a while when KPNW first started and then added some more gold tracks to its playlist. They’ve been playing more gold even before KPNW started possibly due to declining ratings so they are trying to get back those listeners by playing older Top 40 songs in addition to the newer songs. However they do succeed against KBKS which has gone more rhythmic since sister station KUBE has gone off the air to fill the void. That is probably why KBKS has lower ratings since they are mixing in Old School Hip Hop which they would rather hear on KHTP. Their format doesn’t overlap with KPNW since it isn’t a Hot AC or Modern AC so they were able to keep its playlist formula and still tweak it whenever they feel the need to.

Maybe they are just trying to appeal to their audience. They still have a broad playlist despite that.

It's a HUGE playlist. I looked. The playlist has a thousand songs in it. That's just this week. They played a different group of songs last week. Do you know how many times they played Bad Habits? ONCE!! At happened in the evening, not in a prime daypart. And for that one spin, they're getting attacked by the local music police.

A thousand songs? In that format, it means about 600 or so are gold-certified stiffs!

KNDD's playlist is about 400 songs. KEXP's is 850. KPNW has the biggest playlist in Seattle.

For that, they are rewarded with a .5 share. One of the lowest rated stations in town.

Maybe they too realized the song sucked and thought better of it. Attacked, we’ll call it constructive criticism...

If you look at this playlist, and the playlists of most stations, they include lots of songs that get one spin a week. This was one of them. The song runs 3:50 total. If someone can't sit through a single 3 minute song, radio is not for them.
It was pure torture to be honest. That Portugal the Man song “Dummy” sucks too. Lyrical garbage. “One two three four, everybody get on the dance floor”. Cmon. That’s lazy song writing.

“Five, six, seven, eight
I pray the Lord my soul to take”

You can sing along to that part, since you hate the song…

How about the Hoodoo Gurus “Death Defying”
Or
Frightened Rabbit “The Woodpile”
Or
Metric “Now or Never Now”
Or
Car Seat Headrest “Body’s”
Or
The XX “Basic Spaces”
Or
Thin Lizzy “Cowboy Song”
Or
Beck “Heart is a Drum”

Etc.

Or the Von Bondies “c’mon c’mon”
Or Sarah Harmer “Basement Apartment”

Plenty more to add to that big playlist.
