KPNW played “Bad Habits” by Ed Sheeran.

As I always say: Those who can, do. Those who can't, complain about those who can.
You know you can make your own personal playlist for free and listen to it any time you want?

That way you love every song. Very safe and dependable. No deviation from your favorites.
I actually like KPNW and don’t want it to fail. Any of the songs I listed off is better than the Sheeran or Portugal song. By far.

Not sure what's being defined as KEXP's "playlist" but they're entirely DJ selected, so those songs change every single week. They play a whole lot more titles than 850.

As for KPNW, I don't necessarily think Sheeran's a fit or not. It's inconsequential. And even the hippest non-comms like the Current have played Harry Styles. All about what their audience will tolerate, and I'm sure they're trying to find their way.

I think they should play “Stupid Rock” by Slugbug. A song so bad, it has to be good. Listeners will wonder if their tastes aren’t mature enough to listen to 98.9, or if 98.9 is simply trolling them. They could also play “Dooo it” by Miley Cyrus. I believe that music video came with a disclaimer that said “this song is an art piece and shall be taken as such.”

If you look at Mediabase, you will see about 850 songs per week. The songs follow a traditional rotation with some songs getting 20 spins a week. So obviously there is some structure to what they do. But there are a lot of songs that only get one spin a week. More than most commercial stations.

If the programmer of this station started playing the music that would go in my personal playlist it would be doing better ratings wise than it is right now. In my humble opinion.

It would be doing better if they had stayed country. In my humble opinion.

And had far less criticism.

In your most humble opinion. Worth every penny we pay for it.
Listen to any of the songs I listed, any one of them. Just do it. Then listen to the Portugal song. Or the Sheeran song. Listen to several of the songs I listed off. Then come back and tell me what you honestly think. It’ll be a neat little project.

I really like the Heavy Heavy “Go Down River” song and Steven Sanchez “Evangeline” song too. Freakin awesome!

Also many others that KPNW plays. Hope they don’t flip. Especially to something stupid.

That’s not as fun tho, like the neat little project would be. I’m sure you’d enjoy some diversity besides Sheeran and Portugal.
That station looks pretty good to me as it has a lot more variety than most. If you go almost anywhere else, you'll find something not as good in terms of variety.

Precisely why I think we’re splitting hairs here. I would say a big “thank you” to Hubbard for giving us something unique and different. Sure, not every song is my favourite, but it’s easy to switch away and come back. More often than not, I find myself listening for long stretches of time wondering what will come up next when I’m driving around.

Also, in the case of AAA, you could probably stream a station that does play those songs (I know Cmon Cmon is on some, and was on Lazlos Harddrive on KRBZ.) Most other formats are where it is hard to even find a station playing certain music, but there are many shades of AAA.

They seemed to keep the same playlist formula for a while when KPNW first started and then added some more gold tracks to its playlist. They’ve been playing more gold even before KPNW started possibly due to declining ratings so they are trying to get back those listeners by playing older Top 40 songs in addition to the newer songs. However they do succeed against KBKS which has gone more rhythmic since sister station KUBE has gone off the air to fill the void. That is probably why KBKS has lower ratings since they are mixing in Old School Hip Hop which they would rather hear on KHTP. Their format doesn’t overlap with KPNW since it isn’t a Hot AC or Modern AC so they were able to keep its playlist formula and still tweak it whenever they feel the need to.
I noticed more gold on 92.5 in April 2020. This is not new, and given what CHR as a format nationally is going through, I'm not surprised.
