KRGR (Kroger Radio) Vs Atlanta Music Radio

I had a bite of lunch at Cap't D's yesterday and heard songs on their house system that I hadn't heard in years. It was probably produced especially for D's and not xm or sirius because the 30+ minutes I was
there, I heard nothing but back to back music with no talk what so ever.

One of the Captain D's here in Jackson, MS has XM Satellite playing.

Captain D's in Kennesaw, Georgia plays elevator music. Along with all of the area Shoney's, they are the last places in the area to play elevator music in a business. I suspect it is up to each franchisee (I believe the Kennesaw store is a corporate O&O).

One important note...any business playing a radio station or a CD has to get a BMI/ASCAP/SESAC license. Satellite radio (XM and Sirius) and Satellite-delevered music services (DMX and Muzak) take care of the license for you.

1) This HAS to be voted best thread of the year!

2) When I was working set-up at one of the new Publix stores in Augusta back in '96, I heard the "Muzak" version of "Even Flow" by Pearl Jam. I was excited and weirded out at the same time. But, of course, once the store opened, they switched back to the generic "Snoozak" channel.

3) I know some of the private businesses have their own digital player that's tied in to their phone servers, which is pretty much their "on hold" music piped into the store/office etc. As mentioned before, most of the bigger companies will subcontract out to the music companies (DMX or Muzak). With Kroger, Sonic and the other big companies, I'm sure their "personalized" systems is still handled by the companies, but pay a little extra for the personal twist, or not since they're buying in bulk for all of their stores. I'm sure individual franchises (if Sonic has any, but KFC as was mentioned) have a choice to, either get their own, or purchase a subuscription through corporate at a discounted rate.

4) For my money, you can't beat Waffle House's juke box. All requests, all the time, and darned-fine promo music!

5) There's still a Shoney's in the Altanta Metro area? I've got to tell Calandro and Donshay!

Just a skosh off topic, but in the same vein.. have you ever listened at an Outback Steakhouse? Lots of good song selections, but they are all covers! No original artists!

Captain D's in Woodstock is satelite fed but not XM or Sirius and they vary the music.. sometimes country, sometimes AC, sometimes oldies.

Sonic radio cumes well too.

No kidding...Sonic radio is really incredible. Live jocks, phone bits and requests...they're a fun station to listen to while I slurp down a Limeade! :p
All that's missing is the sfx of the boxing glove smacking someone or something when they push product on the TV spots. ;D Or, do they have them?

Stick around as Kroger Radio presents their wacky afternoon drive duo of Dole and Chiquita, pushin' ya home with the best music...

Coming up at seven, it's "Stockboy" with more chances for you to win in the incredible Free Coupon Birthday Game. All you need is a birthday and a shopping cart to win!

...and at midnight, it's "The Janitor" with non-stop music sweeps!
And it's probably VT'ed. ;D

Is Kroger, Publix, Sonic, Capt. D's, et al, paying ASCAP, BMI and SESAC? If not, just wait until the music licensing mafia gets involved in this.

That's pretty much how the Top 40 format was born.

Everyone's forgetting about Piggly Wiggly back in the day. The creme de la creme of supermarket radio.

I noticed a friend of mine always wanted to go to Steak & Shake when we go out to eat. When I finally asked him why he liked going there so much, his reply was "I LOVE their shakes and it's the only place in Atlanta I can go to hear oldies".

On another note, I was at the Walmart on Cobb Pkwy. this morning and noticed they sounded a lot like the new CBS-FM playing the Greatest Hits of the 60's, 70's & 80's.

They also have their own morning show, with a DJ that spews out pro-Wal-Mart propaganda. I was I a store one morning, and that DJ was giving birthday greetings. to store employees nationwide, and interviewing a "star" employee about how "good" it is to work at Wal-Mart. Sadly, I would take Rush Limbaugh over this horse manure, and I would rather the sky fall before I listen to Rush Limbaugh.

The best store radio I have heard is in Target stores...complete silence. Target is the only retailer that does not pipe in music...and for some reason makes it a more enjoyable shopping experience (maybe drop celings, which are no longer in most new big-box construction, helps as well). I like music in the car and in other places, but silence allows me to think while I shop.

Muzak is who provides most of the service to retailers, with Hughes in the business as well. The licensing fees are all paid by the provider and the cost built into the service. They also install the hardware (sat receiver, dish, PA amp, speakers, etc). Used to be back in the day before LEO satellites, stores either got it off a 900MHz terrestrial transmitter, an FM subcarrier, and in remote locations, tapes.

Interestingly in Atlanta, Muzak still has two 900MHz frequencies licensed, one on 956.3375 which used to play an AC mix, and 959.8875 which was "standards" (no vocals at all). These were narrowband (5KHz deviation) so audio quality is inferior. These channels were active up until about 2 years ago when the 959 carrier disappeared and the 956 carrier is up but transmitting a dead carrier as I'm typing this (listening on a Realistic Pro-34 scanner). While most Muzak customers have been transitioned to sat fed programming, you can still see some 900MHz yagis on older fast food joints pointed towards downtown Atlanta. Muzak (Osborn Sound and Muzak actually was the original company in Atlanta) has their 900MHz transmitters on the Westin Peachtree Plaza. They are modified Motorola MSF5000 repeater/base stations designed for commercial two way radio use, circa 1988. They are transmitting 100 watts into an omni directional antenna, typical range of these setups is a round 30 miles.

Interesting tape formats appeared over the years, still have a couple in my collection. One is an A cart type that used 4 monophonic tracks, and ran at 3/34 ips. Still have one of those decks with some tapes circa late 80's. Another one was a cassette format that was similar, 4 mono tracks, but it ran at 1 and 7/8 ips. Later came CD's, I think Muzak still offers the CD formats for customers who can't get sat (like some malls who prohibit tenants from erecting dishes). They are usually proprietary format CD's of compressed tracks and require a special player.

So I shouldn't be confused when the jocks on 95-5 say they play "the most Muzak"? (At least they said that the last time I paid them any attention...) ???
