KRGR (Kroger Radio) Vs Atlanta Music Radio

...So I was "Krogering" the other day, and realized that the "KRGR" music mix sounds better than most Atlanta music stations. As I made my way through the store, here's what I heard:

"C'est La Vie" Robbie Nevil
"Wonder" Natalie Merchant
--Kroger Plus Card Sweeper---
"Shameless" Garth Brooks
---Slow to Fast KRGR radio jingle---
"Uptight" Stevie Wonder

It was a nice change of pace from the same 15 songs over and over again on the Atlanta FM dial.

Seriously. If you want tunes to sing along with in the grocery aisle, nothing beats Ingles. I've been in there and they'll play something I haven't heard in years. Makes me want to spend more $. Perhaps, there are subliminal messages playing underneath?

Bojangles (chicken and biscuit chain--don't know if they're in ATL) in Charlotte plays an oldies satelite channel---just the best music, lots of songs you'd never hear on oldies radio, if such a thing still existed. They play it good and loud and have good sound systems. You can tell that patrons get a real lift from the music---lots of smiles, humming, singing along, keeping time to the music, etc. Its great! So why can't conventional radio do the same?

Kroger Radio is (or at least was) programmed by Cox Radio.

They used to have WSB-AM news updates for a while (KRGR started in the mid 90's, back before Telecom '96 when Cox was only WSB-AM and B98.5).

I've always wondered how they got the music into the stores. It is done via a special microwave link, B98.5's subcarrier signal, or Internet delivery (with the music and ads stored on a hard drive at the store site)

Most stores use a satellite-delivered service (DMX or Muzak). They play the AC/Soft Rock channel. The annoying part is the ad-insertion equipment that plays the ads kicks in right in the middle of the song. In-store audio advertising is a huge business now, with CBS Radio just recently acquiring a company that does this.

BTW...B98.5, WSB-AM, and the other Cox stations do promotions for Publix and Ingles now.

I work for Kroger's Fry's Markets in Arizona. So, for 40 hours per week I am stuck listening to the in-store music mix. However, since I rarely listen to music radio (news or news-talk for me!) there have been tunes on the system that I missed in their initial go round.

Also, being ex-radio, I am aware of the songs that get played more than others and songs that are not called up by the system on a regular basis. I don't know who programmed that machines, but it seems like there are songs that get repeated in a single day (eight hour shift) that would be a no-no on radio, or even on the Internet.

Now, if they could do something about the idiots that read the announcements, or at least the people that write the announcements. I've heard small town radio do it better!
