Weekdays:

6am-10am........Rick Dees

3pm-7pm..........Shotgun Tom Kelly

Interesting, but it won't happen. Kaye is loyal to the people he hires. He won't make changes unless someone leaves or unless they or their ratings are just not cutting it, and I don't see that happening.

Plus... nearly half the listening to KRTH is by Hispanics, and a large amount of that by Hispanics who are Spanish dominant. To that group, balancing the right music with an appropriate but int intrusive amount of talk is what is needed.

LA stations that perform well or overindex among Hispanics have a special set of considerations, and among them is music selection that reflects the listener experience in other places in the world and the possibility that they were not listeners to LA stations 5, 10, 20 or 30 years ago.

This is the new-milennium KMPC. Openings happen when someone retires. Jim Carson did his first L.A. airshift in 1965, Tuna in 1967, but they're both sounding terrific. Shotgun's just getting warmed up as he approaches his 15th anniversary at KRTH and Gary Bryan and Christina Kelley are babies by comparison.

I was in LA for a week at Christmas and I thought KRTH sounded great. The only jock I didn't hear was Gary Bryan - I think he was on vacation, but I remember him from KFRC in the 90s. Shotgun harkens back to Steele, of course - and that's fun - I wish more Classic Hits stations would have an old-fashioned high-energy jock in afternoon drive. Young or not, Christina Kelley was good, too.

Comparing KRTH to our voice-tracked pathetic "New 103.7" (Clear Channel) or even the last pitiful incarnation of KFRC - well...there is no comparison.

Just remember Lew, there will ALWAYS be someone on these boards who doesn't think KRTH sounds good enough. Most will measure it against WCBS-FM or KOOL, but in Los Angeles, KRTH sounds great, and much better than it did the last 5 years or so before Jhani Kaye arrived. Before that the station's format was in danger. Jhani knew what needed to be fixed, and he knew he already had a good staff with the exception of Hollywood Hamilton, who was never right for KRTH. So he did some rearranging. His only real misstep was Joshua Escandon who never was right for KRTH. Would the station sound great with Tuna in the morning? Probably, but they're happy with Gary Bryan and the whole staff as is as far as anyone can tell. Are they as personality oriented as many on these boards would like? Probably not, but as David mentioned, it's a balance. Kaye gives the staff a lot of latitude compared to the way he ran KOST. He seems to be running KRTH a lot like the way he ran KBIG. If the jock has something to say and won't take 2 minutes saying it that's okay, just don't go long. One does wonder about the age of some of these guys. Not because they don't relate, but more like, when will they retire? Shotgun and Carson have to be close to 60, so it is a valid concern.

I remember about 6 or 7 years ago on these boards, people were saying that CBS should just throw in the towel on KRTH and flip it to CHR to go head to head with KIIS. While that ended up being somewhat prophetic, I'm guessing CBS is glad they tweaked the station to classic hits and flipped KLSX instead.

Calguy:

Shotgun is 62 (same age as Rick Dees). Carson's 69 (don't be shocked...his first L.A. gig was KBLA in 1965...47 years ago) and Tuna's 68 (on the air in L.A., with the exception of six months in San Diego, since 1967).

But...they all sound great, they all look great...As long as they're healthy and happy, I don't see any reason for any of them (or CBS) to be thinking about retirement.

At that time, there was no example of an oldies station being successful by stretching the music into the 70s and 80s. Mike Phillips and Jay Coffey were telling us that 300 songs from 1964 to 1972 played over and over again was the only way to do oldies...and that doomed you to unsalable demographics.

Meantime, the idea of flipping KLSX seemed like lunacy...they were King Kong in young males and did well 25-54 too.

Swap Adam Carolla for Howard Stern and Jhani Kaye for Jay Coffey and the whole world changes.

Long the days with Bob Hamilton as PD!! Now that was K-Earth 101. Jhani has done a great job indeed, but the Bob H. era was very special and memorable for Los Angeles.

Even though I left LA over six years ago,I still listen to KRTH through Radio.com.It beats my local"Premium Choice"oldies radio station hands down.
