KRZR Documentary Film "Long Live the Wild Hare : A Rock Radio Story" -- Trailer

For over two decades, Fresno's 103.7 KRZR defined rock radio in Central California. The station left behind a legacy of ground breaking stunts, events, contests and promotions, along with a loyal legion of devoted fans. In early 2012, Fadeaway J Films will honor that legacy by releasing a full length documentary titled "Long Live the Wild Hare : A Rock Radio Story."

The film features candid, in-depth interviews with a long list of former KRZR personalities, including: E. Curtis Johnson, Chris Daniel, Jennifer Lipp, Skippy, Koyote, Brad Giese, Carlota, Chris Miller, Doug Ray, The Reverend, Phillip Theresi, Dave Ross, and Drew "Manhole" Hyatt, along with many rabid KRZR fans and several promoters and musicians from the Fresno area rock scene.

That was awesome, can't wait to see it, KRZR was legendary, and changed Fresno Rock Radio, it's too bad CC (THE DEATH STAR) ended up with it.

I have never lived in Fresno but I had a friend from there who claims that the original KKDJ-105.9 could rival that of KRZR as a Fresno Radio Legend. Is this true? Was KRZR better than KKDJ (and I am talking about when they were AOR) ? Which had the best dj's and which played the best variety of Rock Music?

KKDJ by far was the superior station.The talent level between KKDJ and KRZR was MLB to AA.KKDJ played a wider range of rock and with the 91X (San Diego) connection,Fresno was privy to hear music that was only heard in markets like San Diego,Los Angeles and San Fran.KKDJ was not only known around the state but was also respected.Also I hope we would be able to hear from KRZR alum Kevin Musso,Pete Hansen and Kelly Boom.

KKDJ was a legendary in the 80s especially with Dean and Don and the Breakfast club along with Peter Napali, Jeff Ridal, Mark Davis, Harlen Winslow, and many more, same way KYNO was legendary in the 60s and 70s, in 1989 When KRZR started playing current rock and at a time when formats started to be fragmented, the young listener didn't want to here the 60s music mixed with currents (kind of ironic now) KRZR became "The Rock Station" and had great talent so they can't really be compared.

No roads, just that comment " the talent level between KKDJ and KRZR was MLB to AA", thats just wrong, their was great talent from both stations, as mentioned in my last post, as far as an AOR format KKDJ and KRZR were only were head on for less than 2 years, don't forget the short lived Z-ROCK 107.5 (2/90)-(3/91) during those 2 years, First Z-rock was gone then KKDJ became "The Edge" the first all Alternative Station.

KRZR has had the AOR Format for 20 years, longest of any Fresno Station.

Does Clear Channel dare call that HD-2 "The Wild Hare" or anything remotely close to the legend?

I'd love to have a few hours of of the true legendary Fresno stations, unscoped. Just purchased Dean and Don's KKDJ 1994 stuff. There are lots of scoped KYNO bits floating around. But, I so could use some of the front row....even the bit about my ex-Secretary doing.... Nah, let's not go there.

The talent level between KKDJ & KRZR is just as I said,with Chris Daniel being the exception.You could have transplanted KKDJ and entire airstaff into a top 10 market and they would have sounded like they belonged there.

When did KKDJ-105.9 first go on the air with their AOR format and how long did they remain AOR before switching to Alternative Rock? I also recall when KKDJ was Classic Rock before switching to Spanish in 1996. Didn't KKDJ used to have the syndicated "Mark & Brian Show" from Los Angeles?

KKDJ went on the air December 8, 1979, Switched to Alternative "The Edge" in May 1991, went back to AOR for a few months in 1994, then switched to a 70s hits format, which is when Dean and Don left, and Mark and Bryan was added, a Couple months later they evolved into Classic Rock til September 1996 when they switched to a Spanish Language format.

@kenrayc I am impressed at how good you are at dates. I worked in the Fresno market during the short time Z Rock was on. Also when I was there KYNO-FM switched formats from CHR to classic rock KJFX. I heard so many things about what a legend KKDJ was. But I knew they wouldn't be able to survive all that fragmentation. They were getting attacked on all sides.

KRZR was considered a "Rock 40" at that time. The song I remember them playing the most when I lived there would never be played by a rock station today (or any other format except JACK) the song with "Romeo in black jeans" in the lyrics,I think it was by Sean Penn's brother. They were also all over the Damn Yankees supergroup with Ted Nugent and Tommy Shaw.

That is what happened to KDJK-95.1 in modesto/Stockton. Classic Rock KVFX-96.7 The Fox debuted in 1989 and KHOP-104.1 switched to AOR in 1992 and pretty much sucked the life out of KDJK. KHOP also affected KVFX but not as much until they first became KROW-ARROW 104.1 then KHKK-104.1 The Hawk. The Hawk's Class B signal pretty much destroyed The Fox's Class A signal.

"No Myth" by Michael Penn is the song you're thinking of Jay. (I got to introduce him once at The Wild Blue Yonder during The Edge days) And don't forget The Hooters! KRZR was all over them as well at the time.

Those were fun days. Lots of competition with every station out to win. Happy to have been a part of it.

Just an FYI: this movie will premiere on Saturday June 16th at the Tower Theatre. Showtime is 8 pm and the film will be followed by a Wild Hare reunion as we celebrate what would have been the station's 23rd anniversary. If you want to go, tickets are $10, which gets you into the movie and the afterparty, which will be held next door at the Tower Lounge (formerly the Daily Planet). They are on sale at the Tower Theatre Box Office.

And btw, you can't tell the story of KRZR without talking about KKDJ and they will definitely be mentioned/discussed/honored in the film as well.

KVFX 96.7 Modesto, eventually became KMRQ and was (actually still is Active Rock) the Modesto version of KRZR with the simulcasts and voice tracked shows, including The Front Row, Jenn Lipp and Skippy.
