KTLA Channel 5 (The CW) To Add 5pm and 6pm news

Channel 5 will add a new 90-minute newscast at 5pm and 6pm starting next year.

This does seems to be a very early trend among not only Fox, but CW, as well. What is the ultimate upside? Probably news identification./branding, as there is very little hope these guys can compete with the 3 major affiliates at that hour...plus, if done on the cheap (heaven forbid), might even make immediate economic sense. Should be interesting to see how many of these Fox and CW evening newscasts are still around by 2009.

There is some logic in all of this...local news, done on the cheap or otherwise, is still less expensive to produce and air than reruns, whose per-episode cost is continuing to escalate. Plus, local branding is vital to TV stations in the 500-channel universe. The LA market stations seem to get this, as there are more locally produced news and infotainment shows in Market #2 than almost anyplace else in the country.
As long as KTLA promotes it well and gets good talent as anchors, it might work as an alternative to the other three local newscasts at that hour.

The only thing that surprises me is that KTLA's decided to do it, and not KTTV-Fox 11...other Fox O&O's around the country are producing early evening newscasts in competition with the "big three."

OK, appreciate the heads-up...but this fox/cw/indie trend of doing dinner-hour news DOES seem to be growing. I'm just wondering what kind of legs it will have long-term. So far, I've seen it in a few top20 markets, but that is about it.

I don't know who Molina is, or if he knows what he's talking about...but I would think the huge LA market could stand a 4th newscast at 5:00 and 6:00. In the much smaller Bay Area, our Fox affiliate KTVU has been running news at 5:00 and 6:00 for 2 or 3 years. Also, KRON/4 lost its NBC affiliation about 5 years ago, but never stopped running news at 6:00 and 11:00. The dinner hour newscasts are not all 60 minutes, and the affiliates run their respective network broadcasts at 5:30. But we have 4 newscasts starting at 5:00, 5 at 6:00 and 4 at 11:00. They all seem to be surviving, so I guess even the ones with low ratings must be bringing in adequate revenue.

Certainly there are some Fox stations that are running early evening newscasts, but where is a CW station that does this? Offhand, I'm not aware of a single CW affiliate that is running an early evening newscast.

My orginal CW comment originated from the the first post in this thread, which according to a number of sources here, the author is not to be trusted. So I will retract for now, based on that. However, I would not be surprised to see some CW affiliates try this daypart out for news in the next year. Again, it comes down to branding, doing economic programming, and perhaps utltimately trying to compete locally on some level.

Here on the "Right Coast" I have heard nothing about sister station WPIX starting a newscast at 5 and/or 6 PM at this time. FYI...

I say let KCAL have THE CW, and KTLA revert to independent, increases their news presence and make good use of the news hertiage that the station defined decades ago.

I hope Jessica Holmes anchors because she is smart. I don't know why they dumped her from telecopter 5.
