KTON-AM IN BELTON - OFF THE AIR FOR PAST SEVERAL DAYS

KTON-AM IN BELTON - OFF THE AIR FOR PAST SEVERAL DAYS

KTON 940-AM in Belton has been Off the Air for several days -- I tried to call the station and the number had been disconnected.

This was one of the best classic country stations anywhere. It had a solid daytime signal -- and listeners -- in North Austin, Round Rock and Georgetown and respectable numbers in the Killeen-Temple Arbitron.

Any idea what happened to KTON?

Didn't they just get sold to a new owner?

Yes, sort of. RAFTT (owner of KILE Bellaire/Houston, KWBC Navasota) took over from M&M a couple of months ago. But a check of the FCC records reveals a subsequent transfer approved today. It was on a Form 316, transferring KTON from RAFTT the corporation to JLF Communications, solely owned by the president of RAFTT. Whatever...

Re: KTON-AM IN BELTON - OFF THE AIR FOR PAST SEVERAL DAYS

KWBC in Navasota is a Bryan Broadcasting station. Has been for a little while now. Just FYI. Sucks about KTON though. My old band used to go up there and perform live before our Harker Heights shows. Great group of people there.

i also listen to KTON am in north austin from time to time. wasn't there a post about them being sold sometime ago to another company that wanted to expand thier coverage and moving closer to waco? i was hoping thier would be in the same location and expand thier coverage to reach farther into austin.

Are we maybe talking about an LMA here? Last I saw RAFTT was still the owner of KWBC.

Agreed about KTON; at one time (OK, a long time ago) they were a highly rated station. And sadly, I doubt the new owners will be keeping the classic country format.

KWBC is still owned by RAFTT, according to the FCC ...they have a standing app to move to College Station.

Re: KTON-AM IN BELTON - OFF THE AIR FOR PAST SEVERAL DAYS

If it is true KTON is gone, that is really sad. Those were some good guys doing good local radio. Last ratings had them having a really good book for an AM daytimer. Another local voice in the Killeen-Temple market silenced.

I used to listen in the afternoon while driving home, and thought it had a real down home feel. The music was all over the place but the station was easy to listen to.

I saw those ratings (the 12+) and they were fairly respectable. KTON was the first AM station listed, beating out news/talk KTEM and further down, Austin's KLBJ and D/FW's WBAP. I know you can't make a whole lot of those numbers alone, but you're right. The station had listeners and it's a shame to see it go.

Re: KTON-AM IN BELTON - OFF THE AIR FOR PAST SEVERAL DAYS

Any updates? On the air again?

Re: KTON-AM IN BELTON - OFF THE AIR FOR PAST SEVERAL DAYS

Unfortunately, still off the air. Happened right after the new owner closed on the deal, apparently.

Re: KTON-AM IN BELTON - OFF THE AIR FOR PAST SEVERAL DAYS

Wow. KTON was well respected stations years ago. In 1974, Program Director Chuck Kelly offered me a job. Chuck had worked at KENR 1070 here in Houston, before becoming the PD. I was very tempted, but I thought KIKN in Corpus would look better on my resume. It's a shame to see this station go dark.

Re: KTON-AM IN BELTON - OFF THE AIR FOR PAST SEVERAL DAYS

Chuck Kelly, what a great guy. Man, he had good old radio stories. I worked with him in Copperas Cove for many years. Last I heard, he was retired and living in Lometa.

"Rumour" has it going north

Re: KTON-AM IN BELTON - OFF THE AIR FOR PAST SEVERAL DAYS

That is interesting. The current owners are "holding it" for someone with plans to go north. So this certainly muddles the picture a bit more.

By "going north" do you mean Dallas-Fort Worth? The idea is moving KTON into the Dallas area (considering that 950 in Denison is no longer around) might work. It's really not a new idea, but there are plenty of other problems with co-channel and first adjacents that would make it very tough. I doubt the expense would be worth the effort.

BTW, the "current owners" are the RAFFT Corporation, which just bought it. Are you saying they're "holding it" for someone else?

Re: KTON-AM IN BELTON - OFF THE AIR FOR PAST SEVERAL DAYS

Yes. They are "holding "it for someone ."Someone who has been barely into radio, and much less, a questionable logical working knowledge of it. Just follow the "MONEY Guy". Just read the articles in the "FTW Business Journal "last Christmas ,and the Star Telegram at the same time.

Re: KTON-AM IN BELTON - OFF THE AIR FOR PAST SEVERAL DAYS UPDATE

OK.... here’s whats going on with KTON. The current owner is indeed "holding it" for Dan Frishberg. Negotiations are underway for Dan to own it, and move the license to Rockwall. The studios would be located about 60 miles away (approx) in Ft.Worth. It would be a daytimer with Bizradio programming, thus cutting it ties to KMNY. Dan's out of control ego would place his Filipino trophy wife in charge of it or Dan will not have "peace" (literally) at home. Have you ever listened to her "Fame" show on saturday mornings? I am sure shipping companies play it at full blast in the Port of Houston as a means of scraping barnacles off of ship hulls. She has also fired employees without investigating allegations. A recent episode took place when a long time Bizradio producer in Dallas was fired, because Mrs. Frishberg heard from a Ft.Worth Show Hostess (and Mrs. F’s friend) Shivaun Palmer that the producer was trying to ruin her show. The truth is Shivaun is incapable of following directions, or take cues, she would rather give them, thus she managed to screw up breaks, when the network news aired. So she blamed the producer. Dan's wife without looking into whether Shivaun lied or not, dismissed the producer, who was a dedicated and loyal employee. Dan didn't do a thing, because he doesn't dare make the wife mad, regardless of the harm done to Bizradio. If you ever visited the Bizradio website its all about Dan, when it should be all about Brent Clanton, who really is the brains behind Bizradio, and its young success.
Once Dan's wife is in charge, it will make Jerry Russell look like Bill Gates.
