KTON-AM IN BELTON - OFF THE AIR FOR PAST SEVERAL DAYS

Re: KTON-AM IN BELTON - OFF THE AIR FOR PAST SEVERAL DAYS

Thanks for filling us in on some of the details. Sorry you lost your job.

By the way, the proposed new community of license isn't Rockwall. It's Royse City.

Dan Frishberg- Another example why radio is in free fall.

Well, at least he's still got the gig over at KKGM.

This is all really a shame. KTON was a great local station in the last several years with local radio vets who knew the market and the audience. The last ratings book was great (for an AM daytimer). In a market that had been taken over by Cumulus, Clear Channel, and powerfull signals from nearby Waco and Austin markets...KTON was good local radio.

Re: KTON-AM IN BELTON - OFF THE AIR FOR PAST SEVERAL DAYS

You're exactly right, Horns -- KTON was a great local station and a real joy to listen to here in Austin -- best classic country format I'd heard anywhere -- one that focused on the real "fiddles and pedal steel" country music and generally stayed away from the pop-country stuff.

Does anyone know how I can contact the guy who was doing Middays when the station went dark? He called himself "Bouncing Bob" -- or something like that -- really knew his music -- I know someone who might have a place for him at another classic country station in Texas.

Thanks in advance.

Rafft Corporation (the new owner) is getting ready to file a city of license change for KTON, to provide service over the Dallas-Ft. Worth Metroplex. They just got a grant for expermimental operation to do ground conductivity measurements, so I would think an application isn't too far off.

That application is going to be for Royse City and field testing with the temporary tower should begin shortly just south of there. Here's the authorization letter:
http://svartifoss2.fcc.gov/prod/cdbs/forms/prod/getimportletter_exh.cgi?import_letter_id=6745
Notice that it's authorized for 1680 with up to 1000 watts, which might obliterate coverage from the information station at D/FW Airport during the tests. But we know what's really important, I guess. TIS operations like that don't mean much when compared to bringing another AM signal into the market.

I guess the demise of the 950 in Sherman opened the door for a 940 move-in. Will be interesting to see the proposed power and signal for the permanent 940 signal; probably a narrow WSW pattern.

You're right about that. Since 950 is out of the way it opened the door a little, but there are still a lot of other problems with squeezing in a new station. On 940 one major problem would be Texarkana, meaning that most of the signal would have to directed WSW. Then there are the adjacent channel stations to worry about: 930 in Oklahoma City, San Antonio and Center TX along with 950 in Houston. Then there's 910 in Frisco and 970 in Fort Worth that will be right in the path of a new 940. It would be a narrow pattern alright, and I doubt it would pack a lot of punch.

Another issue might be KIXZ 940 in Amarillo. I used to drive Highway 287 a lot, and recall that KIXZ put a daytime signal into Wichita Falls. So a new DFW 940 probably would have to hold back on any NW pattern. KIXZ has very little signal to the south (to protect 950 Lubbock) so there may be room for a new DFW WSW signal to slip in, since it would presumably aim towards Brownwood/San Angelo.

That's pretty much the way I see it, too. I didn't include Amarillo and Lubbock in the previous post, but those stations, along with WKY Oklahoma City had me thinking that the proposed pattern has to be mainly WSW. It'll be interesting to see the daytime power level as well; it's one of those deals where higher power would mean a tighter pattern. Offhand I'd figure that coverage into much of Collin County might be marginal at best. That's quite a factor, considering the rapid growth of that area and the proposed format.

Look for RAFFT to be doing business in the Sooner State as well.
