KTVT/11 morning show to start earlier beginning in June

The early start time seems to be the latest thing in morning shows. Several Phoenix stations recently bumped their start times to 0430. The on-air staff has delivered thinly-veiled dissatisfaction with it too. They can't have that many viewers at that hour so it must just be more opportunity to sell spots (the same ones they overair during peak hours i.e., personal injury lawyers and car dealers).

Personally, I think the very early start time drags down their later hours. It is pretty clear the on-air talent isn't as sharp as they used to be and they miss out on topics of shows aired the previous evening because they have to go to bed so early.

The economics are pretty simple. These stations are generally adding these shows without hiring anyone new or adding any overtime to their current staff. It's more work for the same amount of money. On top of that, they go from selling only a few ads in the half hour of network or syndicated shows to selling all the ads in the half hour. If they ditched a syndicated show, they're also saving a licensing fee to the syndicator. There's just enough of an audience at that time now to make all of this trouble worth it to them. With most stations seeing ad sales down 30-60% in the past 3 years, every little bit is important to them. Adding these shows may mean the difference between having another round of layoffs and not.

All this competition for capturing early viewers on weekdays, yet Ch 5 is the only station that has local news on Sunday mornings for the 6 AM hour, then there's no local news at 7 AM, until 8 AM when 5 comes back local and 8 starts their "News 8 Sunday Daybreak" show. Folks at 4 and 11 sleeping in I guess. Then there's 21. Does anyone watch 21's "Daily Buzz"?

Keep in mind that 4, 5 and 8 all have saturday morning shows.
Sunday morning just does not have a lot of viewers.
It's better a little later in the morning and that's why they have the sunday morning talk shows.. but it's not a big local news slot. Besides, putting on a show then means ditching paid programming in favor of paying a bunch of people to come in and work. That makes the economics of the deal stink.

I've watched it a couple of times, interesting angle/tone for a morning show. Guess I haven't made it a habit since there's no local weather/traffic on it.

The few times I watched it they had local cut-in segments. Switched over to 21 a few times when Fox4 was busy with Idol (idle) stuff, and the others were network.

Oops, guess I missed it. I didn't watch the show all the way through.
