KTXD Dallas To Launch Weekday Morning News In September

An hour of news and commentary called "The Texas Daily" will run weekdays at 8AM starting in September anchored by former WFAA anchor Jeff Brady. It looks like the contributors will include a lot past big time names from the 80s and 90s -- Tracy Rowlett, Troy Dungan, Scott Murray, Gary Cogill, John Criswell, Midge Hill, Phyllis Watson, and more...

Separately this week, it looks like KTXD will also pick up Southland Conference football games in the fall.

8am?? Not exactly sure what a better time would be, but I don't know what kind of audience they'll have for an 8am timeslot, unless they're aiming at non- 8 to 5 types, or, maybe some will think to DVR it? Otherwise, sounds like an intriguing show. The tacky line from Tim Rogers about Harold Taft was better left unsaid though. Really uncalled for.

This will be more like Good Morning Texas than an actual news show. I suspect you can pay your way to a guest spot on the show.

This is a great Idea! I don't care what they talk about or what time it comes on, I just want to be there to watch and listen to all the legends. Tracy talking news, Troy weather and Scott with Sports...... Also glad to see John Criswell name always wondered where he was...

I'm sure they picked 8AM because the weekday Me-TV schedule starts at 9AM. It'll be nice having something other than 'lectronic religion in that slot: a local show that "fits" with KTXD's classic TV theme.

Since both the new show and Me-TV are aimed at older viewers, many viewers are probably retirees that don't have to be at work by 8. But then again, if I were retired I'd probably sleep until 9 anyway. I guess we'll see how it does.

This is a bit OT :-[ but last Saturday I noticed KTXD was airing a N. Texas college football game on 47.1. Me-TV, of course, was on 47.4. So it looks like they're "localizing" 47.1 more and more :)

Indeed. They had Big East football and have the Southland Conference too.
If they would promote that, they'd get some ratings.

Not only does "The Texas Daily" debut tomorrow, but they've got some local style show starting at 11am. Also, they're running "America Now" at 4 and a half hour of the "Texas Daily" at 4:30. Will be interesting to see how they do.

Good thing I've got the DVR set to 47.4 and not 47.1. I record MeTV's "Emergency" episodes for my wife at 4PM. She'd be pissed if they got replaced!

Keep forgetting about it. Just went to the DVR to set it to record daily, and no TV Guide info. 47's program info cuts off about 7PM today. They aren't sending the TV Guide folks their schedule I suppose, so all I see is the PSIP information out about 8 hours. Have to manually set a timer for 8-9AM.

I like a lot of what KTXD is doing, but they really need to start paying more attention to the EPG. I checked my DVR and it did record Monday's Emergency! for my wife, but the title shows as America Now because KTXD is duplicating 47.1's EPG over to 47.4 even when the shows are different ::) Saturday's Emergency! and Get Smart! show as Southland Conference Football and The Voice likewise.

I've complained before about their EPG only going out 12 hours. My only guess is that they know most receivers, STB's, etc. display 12 hours of EPG or less, so that's all they're sending. They're forgetting about how important a longer EPG is to DVR owners. It needs to be at least 24 hours; preferably 72; ideally a full week (168 hours).

Care to elaborate? I mean, "stinks" covers a pretty broad range of complaints (like, all of them).

Do you miss the old Christian programming? 'Cause it seems like there are plenty of alternatives in the DFW TV market: off the top of my head, channels 2, 20.4, 28/31, 47.2, 51-51.4, and 58-58.5; even more if you speak Spanish.

Or do you want MeTV 24/7? If so, just watch 47.4 instead of 47.1.

Or do you want MeTV in HD 24/7? Unfortunately, all those old shows were recorded before HD existed. MeTV is distributed in SD. The MeTV you see on 47.1 is merely an up-conversion.

True, the bad EPG for 47.4 is a PITA, but you can get a good schedule on the Web at http://www.metvnetwork.com/schedule.php

This is not correct, since many of these shows were shot on 35 mm film. If the film prints still exist, the shows are capable of being remastered in HD from the film. In fact, this has been done for many shows airing on MeTV, including "I Love Lucy", "Perry Mason", "The Twilight Zone", and "Star Trek", to name just a few. Note that none of these shows are airing in HD on MeTV (or anywhere else, for that matter) -- but the fact is that the HD masters do exist in the CBS vaults. In a couple of cases ("Star Trek" and "The Twilight Zone"), these masters have been used to generate HD Blu-Ray releases that look very good.

By "HD" I meant the technology that allows TV reception with at least 720-line resolution. I know film has quality equal to or better than HD, but the technology to broadcast it didn't exist when those shows were produced, just as I said.

Now that HD does exist, I'd love to see shows made available in HD to classic TV networks where possible. But that sounds like a big expense for networks like MeTV, what with buying remastered shows and securing more HD affiliates like KTXD and bandwidth for an HD satellite feed, so I'm not holding my breath. Maybe there's enough potential HD content to make the investment worthwhile, but the fact that MeTV hasn't made that investment hardly justifies Charles123's epithet.

(But now that you mention it, HD could be an opportunity for a local classic TV station like Hot TV! They could buy more bandwidth from Mako's KODF/26 for HD, and drop the simulcasts on 31.3 and 50.4. Even a couple of classic shows in HD would draw a lot of viewers.)

Anyway, I doubt that's what charles123 meant by "stinks." I was just trying to goad him into being a little more specific. If I had to guess, I'd say he was mad that 47.1 is replacing some good MeTV shows with less appealing local content. Maybe his cable co. doesn't carry 47.4 and he lives too far away to get it OTA. Who knows? Kinda hard to tell from "stinks."

Many of the older shows were shot on film. They have to go all the way back to that original source material to make it happen. And face it-- that ups the cost.

Tom, Me-TV does not air any of their shows in HD. They are all 4:3.

Regarding the HD masters that exist for many of these programs -- in my original post, I did note that none of these shows are airing on MeTV in HD.

That said, it wouldn't be necessary to go back to the original film elements to air these programs in HD, since those HD masters made from the film elements already do exist. What would be necessary would be to negotiate with CBS Television Distribution (and their counterparts for non-CBS owned programs) for access to those masters and the rights to air the shows in HD.

Alternatively, I wonder what the legal situation would be regarding negotiating the HD broadcast rights for "Star Trek" and "The Twilight Zone" and then just running them from the Blu-ray sets.
