Going back to the 1980s there were plenty of audio services intended for cable FM radio or as audio filler on video channels.

One such service was Music In The Air, which had a package of a half dozen audio services on my (then) cable system. Formats included Oldies, Big Band, Country, Comedy, Show Tunes, and Adult Contemporary. I think these were transmitted on audio subcarriers of the WTBS satellite feed.

Another was Ray-Tel (sp?) Cable Radio, which had Urban and Rock channels. Not sure where this was transmitted.

And there were the satellite radio superstations, such as WFMT, which was on subcarriers of the WGN-TV feed, and KKGO, which (IIRC) was on subcarriers of the national Trinity Broadcasting Network feed. Although not on my cable system, Moody Bible Institute of Chicago's WMBI was distributed by satellite, also on WGN subcarriers.

Cable FM systems in the early 1980s would also use FM frequencies to distribute stereo soundtracks of some of the TV channels such as The Movie Channel and HBO. And most famously, the early years of MTV featured the "MTV stereo hookup". Turn down the TV and turn up your FM stereo. This was before the advent of stereo on TV itself in the mid-1980s.

Hard to find info on some of these services nowadays. I've never been able to find an online example of the Cable FM converter box I had...I do recall it was a Pioneer unit, but forget the model number.

Apparently, Brother Stair was using TBS's subcarrier for several years.
From a 1999 South Scanner Satellite chart

I have several 1985-86 Satellite TV Week's that I bought a few years back from eBay. In the audio services, they list a music service called Studioline, with four formats (easy listening, classics, super hits, country) on the subcarrier for C-SPAN on Galaxy 1, tp 13. WQXR was on WOR-TV's subcarrier, G1-15. KKGO, the former Jazz station in L.A. (now country) was on FNN's subcarrier, F3-4. StarStation, Country Coast to Coast and a couple of other formats from Satellite Music Network were on WGN's subcarrier at that point along w/ WFMT.

Not listed in this guide, but according to the same chart I posted, the SMN (and later ABC Radio Network) stations moved to Spacenet 3 tp 13, which had no video channel or feeds attached to it. They were delivered through FM2 (FM Squared), below the audio a satellite receiver could get. Many of the DMX/in-store music feeds, and I'm sure with advertisements for stores or grocery products, were delivered the same way, albeit at times you could get some of them on a couple of transponders here and there.

A 1992 aircheck of Super Audio/Radio's New Age of Jazz channel has been posted to spiritof67's Archive channel
