Why Conservative Talk? Sometimes it is about clearing syndicated programs in a market or that a conservative talk format pairs well as part of the advertising mix offered by the company. And sometimes a new competitor can shave off enough listeners from a stronger competitor or two to make things a bit more even. The result is the shave means you have a good shot at dollars that always went elsewhere.
Given the current situation with most AM stations, you know the thinking is the AM will likely always be in red ink, but what can it do for me in building a better portfolio that opens up my group of stations to more buys from the advertising agencies in the future? Can it help in taking a competitor down a notch or two in order to make my stations look better in comparison?
It's now how much life remains in the format or even if the station can turn a profit as long as it has other value that creates revenue in the long run. Chances are quite good a non-heritage AM upstart will never be very financially viable. Quite frankly, the salespeople don't want to sell it. When it comes to time spent and the commission, the salesperson opts for the better rated, higher spot rate FM that generates more commission dollars (ie: put in 10 hours to make $100 off the AM or $600 off the FM for the same hours).
