KVEO rejoins local news race in Rio Grande Valley

KVEO is apparently gearing up for local news at 5pm, 6pm, and 10pm weekdays. The employment page on their website lists jobs for almost every position imaginable, and local listings (at least on ZapToIt), list "KVEO News" for those time periods.

Anyone heard rumblings from the other local stations? Worried over more competition or laughing off the attempt?

I can't imagine them being any competition for 48 or 5 anytime soon. I was working down there during the last TWO incarnations of news on that station, but that's been at least, oh, 25 years back.

The first incarnation was truly terrible. It got so bad at the end that one of the stories in one of the last newscasts was the anchor (Ed Gonzalez?) reading "The Night Before Christmas". The second try was much more professional, with Ron Oliveira doing the six and I forget who doing the ten.

Best of luck to them, of course, but I imagine they've got a loooooong slog to go, especially with the increase in competition down there over the past two decades.

They've been running promos saying "Coming in September, the return of NewsCenter 23". I don't remember the newscasts from before but I'm guessing they were called Newscenter23. Duh. KVEO's graphics are better than KGBT's and KRGV's. At least I think so. So I'm hoping it'll be a good alternative to 4 and 5.

Does anyone here have any numbers on how the four newscasts in the RGV are doing? As a former reporter down there, I find it kind of hard to believe the market can support five newscasts, four in English. Granted, I'm kind of ... disappointed ... by what I've seen of them over the past couple of years, but I don't know how KVEO could do any better.

C'mon KVEO....surprise us! ;D

This will actually be the sixth newscast in the RGV, KTLM Telemundo 40 also has newscasts at 5 and 10. The Azteca America affiliates were supposed to air local newscasts starting in 2007, but that hasn't happened yet.

This week KVEO started running promos saying that their newscast will be airing in high definition. Anchors are Drew Hadwal and Cyndi Garcia. I'm not too sure if I got their names right.

so now that it has premiered, what does everybody think?

By the way, when KVEO did news back in the day, it was not known as Newscenter 23. i think it was known as News Action 23 or something like that.

They definitely need more more.

I hear that they are pre-recording some of their newscasts.
