KWHY-TV Channel 22 to Change Call Letters to KSCN-TV

Didn’t see this coming, but it makes perfect sense, since the new calls will stand for SCieNtology. I just saw this posted in the Facebook group “Classic Los Angeles TV”:
Church of Scientology has filed to change call letters for KWHY Ch 22 when sale is consummated. Permission from KSCN-FM, Pittsburg, TX.

Filed 12/19.

"Call Sign Change Effectiveness Contingent on Closing of Assignment

This request for a change of call sign for KWHY-TV, Facility ID Number 26231, Los

Angeles, California, to KSCN-TV is requested to be made effective as of the consummation

date of the assignment of the station license from KWHY-22 Broadcasting, LLC to Sunset

Boulevard Broadcasting Corporation, which assignment has been approved by the

Commission pursuant to assignment application file number 0000249791. It currently is

anticipated that the consummation will be effective during the first week of January, but the

precise date is not yet known. The Commission will be notified on the consummation date,

and it is requested that the call sign change to KSCN-TV be made effective immediately

thereafter."
The quoted text above is the only source I could find.

I’ve seen it posted countless times here on RD that call letters don’t matter as much as they used to; except to those who post on message boards such as this one (which explains why there are so many TV and radio callsigns out there that are relics of former owners, formats, branding, and network affiliations). Clearly (and for good reason), call letters matter to the new owners of channel 22 in Los Angeles.

I always thought KAZA would change to something "Me" after becoming a MeTV station but that never happened. Surprised about KWHY.

The callsign and affiliation change became official as of today (1/6). Subchannels 22-2 (which had duplicated 22-1 since the demise of Azteca América at the end of 2022) and 22-3 (which carried infomercials in Spanish) have been deleted.
