KWPA-LP 96.9 Coupville to Move to 94.5, 6,000 watts

Uh, NO, this will NOT work. CFBT will blow them off the air at the same distance they were on 96.9 Stay online-only and you won't have to deal with this...

In a co-channel situation such as what we have here, the stronger signal replaces the weaker signal. Not accounting for intervening terrain, the Coupeville signal will overpower the slightly weaker Canadian signal in most of their service area. For example, if at Coupeville or Oak Harbor, the signal strength is 60 dbu, and the Canadian stations signal in that area is 52 dbu, then the Coupeville station will come in nicely.

HOWEVER, if the terrain varies from place to place, you'll have a constant flip between stations except around the transmit site. I don't know the terrain around North Whidbey Island so maybe others could comment.

Flipping back and forth would certainly be annoying and my guess is that North Whidbey would be quite a mess on that frequency.

After a few miles of KWPA-LP's 96.9 signal, CKLG blows them off the air...

KWPA first started on 103.1. Then moved to 96.9. Soon it will be on 94.5.

Meanwhile on 89.9, KXIR Freeland will soon take to the airwaves. KXIR is a secondary station of KSER......

This FM sardine can is ready to burst. I think after KXIR, there should be an international FREEZE on all new FM applications in Western WA/Lower Mainland & Vancouver Island, BC until we sort out this mess up here - even if it means a mass, NARBA-like reshuffling of the FM band. And an end to translators. Because any benefit that FM offers is being eroded to the point of useless.

Fat chance that would ever happen. But it would be a hell of a good start......

89.9 is pretty much the only NW WA frequency left, but it's sandwiched between KMWS (and CJSU in spots) on 89.7 and KNWP on 90.1. All three come in VERY good on North and Central Whidbey Island...

Amen, Bongwater! Let's have a FREEZE on Southern BC/Vancouver Island/NW WA CPs. This is getting out of control. If this keeps happening, say bye bye to E-skip DX altogether...

Why did they have to pick the most crowded frequency in the entire state? From north to south, CFBT, KWPA, K233BU, KRXY, KLIQ, and KMGE that's 6 stations. Look at 96.1 or 97.7, 3 stations each over the same distance.

You probably meant KLYK in Kelso. KLIQ is 94.5 in Hastings, NE (and it's funny, I've logged that before during an Es opening to NE on 7/23/09!)

Good catch! Thanks for correcting. How much is that radio you have? I'm kind of thinking about getting one. I did manage to pull in KANY on the IPod over Christmas break about even strength with CJJR. I think my last log before then was KDUK - Florence, OR around Halloween of 2010.

I have a Grundig G5 (discontinued portable from 2007) and a Grundig G8 (excellent FM selectivity, you can get one at Radio Shack for $50-$60, it also has AM, which is not great, and shortwave bands). I used the G5 for DX last year and the year before, with excellent results, like KWRK 96.1 Window Rock, AZ during an E-skip opening over KXXO in July, and a 200w station out of CO (101.1 KDBN Parachute) in June of last year during a different E-skip opening, as well as many other stations from the TX panhandle up to ND, and from SE NM west to CA. My Tropo record is ALSO 104.7 KDUK Florence (250 miles?)

Here's info on E-skip, mostly happens in the summer, try an open frequency and see what you get if there's activity

Interesting! Around what time of year was it you got KDUK? I remember I got it the same day I first recieved KINK up here after switching radios, the one I was using before couldn't even get KSGX!

I received KDUK twice, first in late July 2010, and second in late August 2011.
